Hi!
I've needed a tractor for quite some time now for 15 acre land. I want to brush hog ten of the acres and farm the five acres. A neighbor has offered me his JD 790 with FEL, Snowblower, Finish mower (not mid-mount) and a cab. It's a 2000 and 1092 hours - my neighbor has taken great care of the tractor. Mainly for mowing and snow blowing and has changed the oil regularly and has all the records since he first purchase the tractor new. I'm in the Central New York area and the price he is asking is 10,600.00. Is this a fair price? Not sure how to check the price since all the internet information varies quite a bit.

Thank you!

Compare the prices on TractorHouse to see if that's a good going rate he's asking. Of course you have to factor in all the implements too.

The John Deere 790 is built by Yanmar in Japan and is an excellent machine. Do your research to see if it has the PTO power needed to perform the tasks you want to accomplish.

Have looked on Tractorhouse.com?
From what I see there it's reasonable. I had a Deere 850 that was needed very little attention to keep running. The only reason I traded was I started having trouble clutching due to a bad back.

I would grab that machinery ASAP. You may not think about using the finish mower for brush hogging, but all you need to do is make a few runs with the mower elevated and go slow. Gator type blades even better. Then its easy to stay on top of it year round. You could even sell the snow blower and front hitch combo for a few thou$and and go with snow some other way.

You can easily run a 9' hay mower and a vintage baler to make some horse hay bales to sell. That's what I do.

I paid $10,500 for my 2004 790 (385 hours) w/300 loader & 5' Woods 3-pt finish mower around six years ago in southern IA.

With what you're looking at, if everything's in good condition, that doesn't sound bad to me!

Sounds like a good price to me, assume it's 4 wheel drive?

Thank you for the response and the ideas. I was was wondering about using the finish mower for brush hogging, but I wasn't sure it could pull it off. Thanks again.

Yes, I checked tractorhouse, but was thrown off with prices close to 10k with less hours. However, I do need to take the implements into consideration and that's where I got lost.
Yes, it's 4 wheel drive. I will do further research regarding the PTO power for the tasks. Now I have more confidence in going forward with the purchase - Thanks for the responses!

buying from a known seller add value in my opinion.. You may find one cheaper, but was it abused..

The 790 is a 'bullet proof' tractor.. - BUT im not sure if i would want to mow 10 acres with it on a regular basis, unless you like seat time - the recommended rough cut mower is only 5' wide I believe (that is what my dads is)..

I had a 770 bought new. Same machine just the older version. I got rid of it because it was not hydro. The gear/speed selection was limited. I had a front blower but going back, you only had two speeds. With the revs up for blowing, one range was too fast, the other too slow!

In fact one guy gave me a deposit, and then called saying he was informed about the (non hydro) transmission. I was nice enough to refund his deposit. A neighbor bought it.

Great machine, high quality, Nice Big Tire Size (Which is what attracted me to it). I bought it on sale, but had a hard time getting enough money for a barely used machine. Fortunately, I had found the front blower cheap at auction that made up for it. The neighbor has been happy with it, lately only cutting grass with the belly mower..
