john deere 755 tach problem

Hey all, I have an 1989 jd 755 and although the hour meter works in the tach the tach itself does not work. Does anyone have a clue on this matter. I love the machine and I like to see what its doing while using a blower or brush hog. It is a little nerve racking for me to not see an operational tack needle. any clues??? thanks, stu.

The tach is a sealed unit and is not meant to be repairable. If the hour meter is working, that proves the cable is ok. Only solution I know of is to replace the tachometer assembly.

well if i do replace it then the true hours are gone and I zero out right? I dont want to do that...any possibility something is loose?

Why not take a picture of your tach installed with hours showing and then install the new tach afterwards and take another picture. Save the old tach though if you want for documentation.

Doesn't matter if something is loose or not, it is sealed anyway.

I looked at a NH TC29 tractor last year, before I wound up buying my 790. Somehow the owner had managed to fry the dash panel and all the electronics. It cost him over $300 for a new panel, but he saved the old panel with the hourmeter showing it had an extra 300+ hours on it. So, that is a good idea to save the old tach if you do replace it.

You can try to run up the hours on the tach with a drill motor or other juryrigged device. I'd just keep the old tach and buy a new one.
