I own a 1983 John Deere 750 compact tractor and it won’t start. It started fine until I installed a ROPS bar on it. Now, when you turn the key to start, you get nothing. It will start and run if I jump start it by crossing the ignition and battery terminals on the side of the starter. I’ve checked the battery (it’s good), I checked the PTO safety switch (it’s good), and I’ve checked the gear shift safety switch (it’s good). The seat safety switch is totally gone. The previous owner apparently disabled it. Any suggestions? Also, does anyone have a “layman’s” diagram or drawing of how the seat safety switch should be connected? I have the service manual, but I can’t make neither heads or tails from it. Thanks.

Check the wiring connectors near the ROPS bar attachments on the axle. One may have gotten pulled apart, shorted and blown a fuse, or you made a mouse angry and it chewed a wire. Recheck the seat switch override to see if it fell out. Owners just jamb a wire across the terminals. Maybe it fell out.

The 750 has an interlock switch on the PTO lever. There might be a second one on the clutch, don't remember...haven't had mine for about 15 years. Don't remember one on the seat, but there could've been. The interlocks go thru a relay I believe, that might have failed/gotten disconnected.
EDIT: come to think of it, the relay was between the key switch and the starter solenoid. In any event, if it's not working it'll give the symptoms you have.
