I recently bought a place on 10 acres and an old JD 750 tractor with a loader came with it. The tractor ran fine at first but recently started to emit oil and/or diesel from the breather tube. The tractor smokes a lot upon starting it but then seems to have normal exhaust after running for a few minutes. The tractor starts right up, even in cold weather, and runs fine other than emitting liquid from the breather tube. The amount coming out of the breather tube ranges from light when the tractor is idling to significant when I hit the gas. The problem seems to have gotten worse in a hurry.
I can't tell whether it's oil or diesel coming from the breather tube. I did change the oil and the old oil had a sulphur smell in it. It smelled very different than typical oil from a gas engine. Is that suggestive of diesel in the oil pan? Is there a way to tell what's coming out of the breather tube? It's dark in color.
I've read up on it, could be the fuel injector, could be worn rings....I don't want to repair something only to find out that wasn't the problem.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!
