I purchased a JD 7210 sight unseen from a wholesaler. Crazy maybe but it was $10k less than anything I could find local. It had been painted with new interior kit so it looked good and the engine and transmission was strong. The seller told me there would be some things I'd have to fix but it was priced accordingly. With what I've spent so far, I'm still ahead.
I noticed someone had wired the PTO switch straight to the PTO solenoid and the MFWD switch didn't work. The indicators on the dash didn't light up either. I drove it like that for a while and then found the JD diagnostic and test manual. You know the one you can't buy unless someone from a JD dealer puts it on ebay. If you ever get your hands on one of those, you will be in hog heaven. The thing is like three or four inches thick.
This tractor (1999 year model) has two computers in it (CCU and HCU) and both can be read and calibrated from the dash display. No need for a proprietary John Deer computer or software. So it's a computerized tractor, but you can work on it - provided you have the right info.
After chasing down the MFWD and PTO issue, I found the CCU had not been provisioned for this tractor (or "calibrated" as they call it). Both the MFWD and PTO functions had never been turned on. Once I entered the appropriate calibration codes, they came to life, the dash indicators worked, PTO speed appears in the display, etc. There were a lot of other things that weren't provisioned correctly like the tire size, tractor model and even the serial number was blank. I found a date code on the CCU that was 04-13-2008. I'm guessing someone put a new CCU in the tractor and just didn't know now to set it up - which can be done from the dash using the turn signal switch when it's in diagnostic mode (insert a fuse in certain spot to get into diagnostic mode). You can also set the tractor hours (but I think only once) so this tractor probably has more hours on it that I thought. Either way, it has no blow by, runs great and looks like a new tractor. At least they did a superb paint job.
I wish this tractor could talk. Thereç—´ probably a few good stories it could tell me.
