I purchased a JD 7210 sight unseen from a wholesaler. Crazy maybe but it was $10k less than anything I could find local. It had been painted with new interior kit so it looked good and the engine and transmission was strong. The seller told me there would be some things I'd have to fix but it was priced accordingly. With what I've spent so far, I'm still ahead.

I noticed someone had wired the PTO switch straight to the PTO solenoid and the MFWD switch didn't work. The indicators on the dash didn't light up either. I drove it like that for a while and then found the JD diagnostic and test manual. You know the one you can't buy unless someone from a JD dealer puts it on ebay. If you ever get your hands on one of those, you will be in hog heaven. The thing is like three or four inches thick.

This tractor (1999 year model) has two computers in it (CCU and HCU) and both can be read and calibrated from the dash display. No need for a proprietary John Deer computer or software. So it's a computerized tractor, but you can work on it - provided you have the right info.

After chasing down the MFWD and PTO issue, I found the CCU had not been provisioned for this tractor (or "calibrated" as they call it). Both the MFWD and PTO functions had never been turned on. Once I entered the appropriate calibration codes, they came to life, the dash indicators worked, PTO speed appears in the display, etc. There were a lot of other things that weren't provisioned correctly like the tire size, tractor model and even the serial number was blank. I found a date code on the CCU that was 04-13-2008. I'm guessing someone put a new CCU in the tractor and just didn't know now to set it up - which can be done from the dash using the turn signal switch when it's in diagnostic mode (insert a fuse in certain spot to get into diagnostic mode). You can also set the tractor hours (but I think only once) so this tractor probably has more hours on it that I thought. Either way, it has no blow by, runs great and looks like a new tractor. At least they did a superb paint job.

I wish this tractor could talk. Thereç—´ probably a few good stories it could tell me.

Good story. You just have to read that manual and get a clear understanding of the sequence of the turn-signal switch operation. It's using a 'Binary' system of 1's and 0's.
You have big tractors. What do you use them for? Maybe some pics?

Buying them used can save some $ the test manuals are very pricey, but anybody can buy these books you do not have to be a dealer.

Didn't know that. I paid $135 for the test and operations manual on ebay. It's pretty easy to get the hang of changing the digits with the turn signals in diagnostic mode and beats having to pay JD to do it with a laptop for sure.

I mainly use these two tractors for hay baling. I do maybe 300 to 500 bales a year. That's not much, but it's getting harder and harder to hire it done. And, I'm in charge so I can cut when I want to, not when someone can finally get to it. And if I want to bale that 5 acre patch at the end of the summer for a few more bales, well that's just plain having fun...

I may have another issue. Seems the MFWD is locked into 4WD. The solenoid and voltage coming from the CCU is all good so I'm hoping its just an o-ring issue in the transfer case. I need to pull it anyway to fix a seeping gasket leak where it bolts to the underside. One Lonely Farmer on youtube had this same issue with his 7410 and put it on video. Stay tuned...

JD Dealers don't use a laptop to change the coding on that era of tractor either. They use the turn-signal switch just like it says in the manual.

$135 isn't bad for the printed, printed for a new one is $200 but cd format is only $100.

Where do you get the part numbers for the manuals? I'd like to get the CD version for my 6403. Will it be a PDF?

Edit: Called the local JD dealer and he just ordered the CD for me. It comes from a third party vendor and the ship it straight to the house. $99

It is the same # as the book that you have just add cd to the end, and yes I believe it is in a pdf format. For the diag & test for a 6403/6603 it is tm6025cd, should be about $100 from a dealer.

Well I checked and the tractor is stuck in 4WD, so I'll pull the bottom housing and take a look at what's going on. Hopefully, just some o-rings on solenoid actuator. I need to redo the permatex gasket to fix a leak there anyway.

I still have a hydraulic issue with one of my SCVs. Since I have the manual, I can fix it on my own if I had a decent hydraulic test kit. I see some generic hydraulic test sets on ebay, etc. Was wondering if you guys can recommend a generic one that's not $1,000 and would work for JD tractors?

Thanks,
Gary

Anything with "Stauff" brand gauges is good. Usually you need to 'invest' in the adaptors on an as-needed basis.
