Has anyone added a liquid fertilizer system to a 71 planter? I am considering getting a 3 row 71 planter and Im wondering how hard it would be to add. If I could get away with a gravity feed system I don't think it would be too hard. I have seen premade ones such as the yetter one below but, id like to build something myself.

I have a 2-row JD71. You could use a 12V electric pump instead of gravity feed. Or a pto-driven pump. Have at it--looks like a nice project.

Good luck.

A few years a go I purchased a 7 row JD 71 planter which was set up for liquid. The seller needed the tank and pump but left the distributor and lines. Here is a picture of the distributor and the lines. Each line was attached to a small metal tube behind the disk openers. A rather simple setup.

I'm trying to figure this one out, too, for my 2 row 70 Flexi. When I built the toolbar, I built it a little heavy to add it on later. Either liquid, or granular fertilizer. I believe the liquid is pumped by a "squeeze pump" ground driven off the planter drive. Similar to the ebay listing. John Blue squeeze pump | eBay I see them on there from time to time. My 70s have the adaptor on the left side that will drive an insecticide box, one of my ideas was adapt it to turn a 2 row fertilizer hopper like this ebay listing. John Deere large fertilizer boxes | eBay . I see these tanks for the liquid pop up on ebay from time to time, too. John Deere liquid fertilizer tanks for 7000 / 7200 corn planter. | eBay.

I put a Cole side dresser on my JD two row 71 toolbar. I attached a pair of JD double disc openers for dry fertilizer and ran the hoses from the side dresser into the drop tubes on the openers. Looks insane but works good! I'l be taking it out of the shed once the snow is gone for good and can take a picture of my setup then. The Cole side dresser has it own drive wheel to power the distributor.

I was going to use liquid but it is more expensive and harder to find around here in small quantities.

Here is a picture of the openers. In this picture they are locked with a bolt. One the bolt is removed the springs on the openers will push the discs down to make contact with the soil.

No problem post all you want. I probably won't be buying my planter for another week or so though. I saw those tanks on ebay too.

I have found it fairly easy to find orifices that will work for adding the correct amount of liquid fertilizer. Based on travel speed, orifice size, and mix concentration, a small 12 volt pump would work very well for me. (Already have the tank and pump) Where I have had the issues has been a source for purchasing the small quantities of the liquid fertilizer. Add to that the knowledge of which fertilizer is appropriate. I have been primarily interested in the "in furrow" starter fertilizer. Possibly more added later with the herbicide/round-Up.

Readers Digest version; Where to purchase and what brand/mix to use????

Low-salt version for the in-furrow. Can mess up corn if you get over 5-6 gallon an acre.... Regular salty fert can be a real mess in the row. You might get by with low rates on wet, clay soil, but.

You won't be able to put enough fert on in furrow. That is a pop-up type of fert, to get it going early & strong.

Best to put the rest on 2 inches to the side, 2 inches deep, or put it on with a cultivator later & work it in a bit. Or have the coop broadcast the right amount before you plant.

Corn uses not quite 50 lbs of P and 40 lbs of k, and needs .5 to 1.2 lb of N applied per bu of corn you hope to harvest, depending what the previous crop was. Need to have your soil ph up over 6 or the fertilizer won't matter, and all this is general goals, actual soil type and yields and so forth can customize a better plan with more specific numbers....
