I am thinking of getting a used JD670. Does anyone know what the rear PTO speed is on these tractors? I had gotten a Bolens Iseki only to find out the rear PTO was 472 and while it would work with new bush hogs, it would not cut or work as well in high grass.

Is there a difference between the earlier models and the later ones? Or do all have the same specs. I saw that some later models had a higher HP rating.

It's 540 RPM @ 2850 engine RPM. For your info, it's 16 HP @ the PTO, Engine is rated at 18.5 HP. This comes from the Operator Manual.

As far as the different horse power ratings you've seen, I suggest these may have been up'd somewhat by the sales people. I've often seen the rated HP as 19 or 20 on MachineFinder.com

This is a nice little tractor. They're strongly bulit and should go for years.

The only thing I wish they had was a dual stage clutch (½ depressed to change gears, all the way down to stop the PTO). The machine you're looking at probably has a single stage clutch which, when disengaged stops the tractor and PTO. It's really a minor limitation, however.

I owned mine (a MFWD model with FEL) for almost a year. It used mostly for mowing a little over an acre, hoggiing another acre and plowing snow on a 60-70 yard drive (plus parking pad). It's a bit overkill for these tasks, but the price was right...and if we get significant snow, it'll be well worthwhile.

I've had no problems with the machine except some nitwit must have used an impact wrench when the oil drain plug was installed last oil change or, they epoxied the plug in. To make matters worse, the sump plate was RTV'd on too. It'll take a trip to the dealer to square this issue away, I'm afraid.

I've got a JD 670 too; I've had it since 1999. This tractor is very durable--overbuilt in some ways. The manufacturer used some of the same parts for this as for the larger members of the 70 series. If you can, set this tractor alongside one or more of the newer compact utility tractors and compare things like the size and weight of the castings, the size of the bolts, etc. By the way, the list price on my 1997 Model 670 was almost $12,000. I, too, wish the tractor had a live PTO, but I am living without it and have no intention of trading in this super tractor. Fuel consumption is miniscule. The only badly-designed part that I've discovered up to now is the parking brake rachet. This wore out quickly. I really enjoy my tractor and I expect that it's going to last as long as I'm able to use it and then some.
