Ok so I have been a lurker for a while now and have just created a account and this is my very first post! So I hope I am doing it correctly..

Anyway I have a 1998 John Deere 770 with a John Deere 70 Loader, The tractor is MFWD and has turf tires there is a somewhat local guy that has a john deere 660 3pt tiller for sale at a really good price... I am wondering if this is too much tiller for my tractor I have read according to specs that my tractor would be a little under powered for this attachment.. However I am just curious as if I went slow and made multiple passes would I create any serious problems ? Thanks in advance to all!!!

Your instincts are good... the 660 is a bit too much iron for your 770 - IMO! I had a 660 for almost 7 years and used it with my old JD970 (30hp @ pto) and my JD 110TLB (33hp @ pto). That tiller would take everything (and more) that either of those tractors would tackle!

Nonetheless, when using any ground engagement implement the horsepower requirements will vary greatly with soil type and soil conditions. Clay costs more hp-wise. Sandy soils cost less. If you've got rocks and hills - that's harder work for your tractor and tiller or disc harrow or plow, etc. And if the ground is dry, hard-pan or wet, and heavy; those soil conditions can require more horsepower.

But... if you set the tiller up to only dig a couple of inches and go slow - with multiple passes through the area; you might just be fine. You know best the land and area you'd like to work.

Hi and thanks for responding I do have light sandy on my property no clay at all however you never know where I may end up taking it either.. that is why I posted here to see if anyone has tried a tiller like it on that series tractor. I really appreciate your input thanks again.
