Hello,

I have a John Deere 62D mower deck and I saw somewere that they make a set of wheels to roll the deck around on it side for storage. Can anyone help me with where i can get them and who has the best deal?

Thanks Rich :)

Do a search to find several old threads on this. I can't remember who sells them but it was in the discussion. If you want to make your own, you need 10" wheels and 1/2" iron pipe works about right for the axles. I like using wheels set up for 5/8" axles because 5/8" rod is a good fit inside 1/2" pipe.

No way will a 5/8" rod fit inside a half inch pipe. Maybe you meant 3/4" pipe with a 5/8" axle going into it.

One would think that unless they had worked with pipe enough to know how screwed up our measurement system is. In the US, 1/2 inch pipe has an outside diameter of 0.840". The inside diameter depends on the wall thickness, which varies by pipe schedule (pressure capability). Schedule 40 (also known as standard wall, the common commercial piping material) has a wall thickness of 0.109". Subtract two wall thicknesses (0.218) from the outside diameter and you get 0.622", close enough to 5/8" that you can get a 5/8 rod into it. Try it.

If I remember correctly, the JD shafts for the 62D deck are about 7/8" diameter, so the 1/2" pipe outside diameter is close enough to work OK.

Today I made a stand for my 62D mower. I also used following a post by KennyG: 1/2" black pipe and 5/8 rod.
My only problem and Gary Flowler is correct the 5/8 rod doesn't exactly fit, and I had no easy way to mate the two together.
I had my local Home Depot Depot use a 36" long black pipe and cut it into 2, 15" long pieces without threads. I deburred them at home
The 5/8 rod I cut into 4 pieces with a hand hack saw, and after applying some graphite I pounded the rods into the pipe ends with a 3lb hammer.
Mind you I had to really pounded hard enough that I really rounded over the end. I can't imagine they would ever come out especially for what I am using them for.
I cleaned the ends up with a grinder so they would fit the wheels.
My finished product has 3" of rod sticking out each end. I built in a little slop just in case I decided to visit a welder, and have them tack welded, but again I don't think I'll need that.
Drilled holes for hitch pins or cotter pins, and drilled a hole in the black pipe for the latch that sets the mower wheel height.
I added large washers, and took KennyG advice again and ordered 10" wheels.

Not having a welder or lathe I was pleased with the result and it sure does save space standing the 62D vertically.
There are photos around, but if you need more I will gladly post some tomorrow.

PS thanks KennyG

There's probably a little tolerance on both the pipe wall thickness and the rod diameter. I've inserted both 5/8 plain and threaded rod into a 1/2" pipe with little resistance, but I may have just been lucky. In any event a touch on the bench grinder should bring the 5/8 rod down to fit easier if it's too tight.

Hey Trav City,
I had this exact challange a few years ago storing my 62D mower and purchased the kit from Mower Deck Axle Co (Carrera,Cayman,BMW,Tow Hook License Plate,John Deere,Kubota).
This worked great, the 8 inch diameter wheels are a bog help in moving the deck in the garage and I would buy this again in a second.

I used the largest 2' (or 18") galvanized threaded bolt that TSC had.. it was like 1/2" OD and the guide wheel openings are 7/8" ID, I bought some brass reducers ID to go into the guide wheel openings to fill in the difference as much as possible - I think I have about 1/8" gap in two places.. Then I used 3/4" ID pvc pipe as a spacer to keep the wheels on the underside of the deck as far out as possible when upright..
