It's time to replace my old IH 434 loader tractor with a new 4 wheel drive tractor. I have narrowed the seach to two tractors, John Deere 5403 or New Holland TT75A.

It seems that none of the dealers in my area have sold many of these tractors, so they have very little info about the reliability or any problems with these tractors. I thought that this would be the best place to get some more info from people that own one of these two tractors or have been shopping for one of them and have got more info then I have found.

My biggest concern is with the quality of these tractors as they are both "economy" tractors. I don't know if this means that they don't have all the bells and whistles or if they are made cheaply that will cause problems down the road.

Apparently the John Deere is made in India ant the New Holland in Georgia. Should I be worried about the quality of a tractor made in India or is it made to traditional John Deere standards?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Rob

The NH TT is not made in GA, it is an Indian manufactured tractor as well. It's basically the old Hesston-Fiat 66 series, which were very tough, dependable tractors. The Deere 5x03 series is basically the old 5000 series Deeres from the early or mid 80's, so there's no need to worry about quality issues there either. These value tractors are just older technology that has been paid for for years, which allows the lower pricing compared to the more modern machines. I wouldn't hesitate to consider either tractor, I prefer the older technology. NH may be better on price, but they will be very close.

Someone wrote they were a bit windy about the TTs having bull gear final drive instead of planetary. Didn't actually say what was wrong with the bull gear set-up, but something interesting I noted on the JX and TD series tractors, which I think have same final drive, is that in comparison (though they weren't class leaders in other areas), their lift capacity on the rear linkage was so much higher than the competition that I thought it had to be a mistake, but it seems to be in all the specs. I am just wondering if that is due to the heaviness of the axle and bull gear housing that may give them a better rear lift capacity. I don't know. Can't find specs for the TT. (Correction, the TT seems to be a lot lower in rear lift capacity compared to the TD, so it might be a different rear transmission. Sorry, thought they would be the same.)

Taken me a while to figure out where the bits and pieces that make up the TT, TD and Case JX tractors came from. The engine is stamped Iveco, but apparently it is based on the Cummins B series engine. It's a fairly high reving engine and fairly loud when under full power, but it isn't noisy in the sense of rattly or knocking noises - just seems to have a loud exhaust note.

I don't know whether they've released the straddle mount JX in the US, but I think it is a bit heavier, and I think looks nicer than the TT. I like the underside exhaust, but I think JD has aftermarket exhausts that go underneath he tractor too - the upright exhausts look pretty precarious with a loader.

All that I can add is that I own a 5403, and have been very pleased with it thus far. Zero problems.

If you go to the New Holland site New Holland North America: Products

You can do a competitive comparison between the TT75 and the 5403. The TT has the bigger engine and is non-turbo. The revs for the rated PTO speed seem high at 2400 for the JD - surely that has to be wrong.

I believe the JXC in the US is the Australian straddle mount.

The JXC is the New Holland TN/4000 series equivalent.

They do look similar, but the specs for the JX straddle mount tractors seem to be different to the JXC. The JXC has a 3.2 litre engine and a powershift transmission, while the JX has a 2.9 and a basic synchro I think. Looks like models are exlusive to each market - we don't seem to have the JXC and the US doesn't seem to have the straddle mount JX. The most similar model to the JX strad, that I can see on the NH site is the TNA, but it seems to have more transmission options. These models might be getting too high a price range. I just thought the JX would have been more comparable price wise to the TT, but I have only confused the discussion it seems - unless they end up releasing it there too. Seems to be an updating and shuffling of model ranges with CNH at the moment, so it is hard to say.

I don't believe that you would go wrong on either tractor. Just purchase the one that seems to fit you and you prefer best. :D

2400 RPM is the correct PTO RPM for the 5403, and yes the turbo does sing at this speed, but the power is excellent. Also, the front spindles and bearings are larger on the JD, especially if you intend to run a loader.
