I recently bought a '97 John Deere 5400. It is equipped with what I call the "A-B-C" transmission. There are very few issues with the machine, but the dash light for "P" or Park won't light. I don't see a true brake lock on the tractor and believe it is suppose to light when the transmission is in the "P" position. Also, the PTO dash light won't light when the PTO is engaged, I assume that is what it is for. Also, when the headlights are turned to high beam, the high beam indicator on the dash lights, but the headlights are dark. A great tractor overall, but I always want everything to work, so I need to track these things down. I did notice that the seat safety switch is unhooked, wonder if that could affect the "P" park dash light?

I take you did not get an operators manual with your tractor. I own a 5210 and I believe on the 5X00 tractors as the 5X10 tractors, the Park indicator is there just for show ie it is none functional. I attached the page from my operators manual on this, note the last line.

Please note you MUST be stopped before putting the gear shift level in the park position.

On the PTO light, I would guess the bulb is bad. If the tractor will not start with the PTO on, then the switch is good. If you take off the left cowl, you should be able to reach the bulb.

Oh high beams a few things to check, the fuses, light switch or diode (part number RE170320).

All the switch under the seat does on my 5210 is sound an alarm, when you get off the seat and the PTO is turned on.

Go to this JD site and you can order/get manual numbers. There should be an online manual for your loader, if you got one.

JD5210 is right, the Park Light does not turn on. Even in the Park range.

Hello swat1018. I'm looking for a good tractor for this 11 acres I just bought (old logging property). I have a lot of slopes. I found a 1996 5400 on Fastline. It has 4300+ hours on it. They're asking $13K. I wonder what you think of your 5400 and any tips/advice you can offer.

Also, they say this in the description: JOHN DEERE MODEL 5400 DIESEL TRACTOR WITH 9/3 TSS TRANSMISSION, DUAL SCV WITH JOY STICK CONTROL AND TELESCOPING DRAFT LINKS. Any help in translating some of this information?

Here's the link: 1996 John Deere 5400 Tractors | Quality Equipment, LLC Clinton, NC #172818

Does it look like a good buy? What should I look for if I go look at it?

I haven't been around tractors since my youth, and we had Allis-Chalmers so I'm somewhat inexperienced at what to look for on a tractor these days.

Looks like someone did a very nice job of cleaning up and painting the tractor. It does have a number of hours on it. It appears the front screens are missing part number RE66040 and RE66041, cost is about $250 each. I have attached a link to JD parts if you would like to look it up. Looks like the panel RE62599 this is right side for the hood is missing on both sides. Head light beam plastic cover looks fogged up.

These are the major things, to me. I would make sure they changed all the fluids and filters and adjusted the valves. I suggest you check the clutch freeplay and how much adjustment is left. Big ticket item if the clutch needs to be replaced, since the tractor needs to be split. I have included a couple other URLs on the 5400. Is the fuel gauge working. Check the blow-by hose to make sure it is clean and dry.

I have not seen a lot of used loaders for sale, so if that is something you are considering later. You might want to look into that now. The 521 and 540 are loaders for that tractor.

tractorhouse.com and machinefinder.com are sites to look at to compare prices.

I love my 5400, it too has about the same hours. I had several bulbs out and the headlights didn't work, took me a day to sort that out, but now everything works. Mine has a loader, but otherwise is about the same tractor, without the canopy. I paid 17,000 for mine and a neighbor has offered me a little more than that for it. I run a heavy Great Plains 6' drill with it and it lifts it and handles it fine. I also have the 9/3 TSS, it does the job for me, mine doesn't have the telescopic links (would be nice). I think that is a fair price, the loader bumped mine up some.

If they throw in the screens, side panels and a set of tires, price would be fair if it is mechanically good. The front tires are shot and the rears appear less than 25%.

I have a 5400. A pin broke in my shift linkage beyond reach. Do I need to take the cab off to access the top of the trans to get to the broken pin?

:welcome: to TBN

Not sure which of many pins in shaft linkages you might be referencing here.

Go to jdparts.com and put in your model number, then locate the assembly giving the problem. Might get some help if the shaft is located and which pin it might be.

Hang in there, as help will be on the way. Pics would help too.
