john deere 5400

I am looking at a deere 5400. The owner says that it is a 1998 60 HP model....
Everything I can find says they only made this model until 1997 and it is a 60 HP tractor....
The asking price is 17,500.00 ...It has 1600 hrs. and has a 520 loader....
Anyone know if the info is right or is this about the right price...
The tractor looks fairly clean...

Take a look on ironsearch.com. I just did and found a handful of JD5400 units listed with prices starting at $11,500 and up. You didn't mention the transmission or whether or not it is four wheel drive. These items make a big difference in price. Also the condition of the tires.

I havn't got a reply from them on the transmission yet but I know it's 2WD...I think they have it priced a little high...If I can get it for 16K I think I'll buy it...Thanks for the info

I think the price is high also.

I would low ball them and don't be afraid to walk away. If they are hungry they will bite.

If it has the forward reverse/ park on the dash, leave it right where it sits. I have a 5300 and it gave me the fits the first week. It will lock up the tranny so you can't move. If it weren't for the loader to rock it a bit, I would be screwed. The first time it did it the first week I owned it. About 6 mo later it ruined the tranny. 6000 dollar fix. Had to replace the creep gears and the 4X4 gears as a chunk fell down into them. They had a recall on them and I got my money back, but the problem still exists. I don't use park unless it is on level gound so what is the point of having it.
3rd gear welded itself to the pinion gear and it had to be torn down, also a recall item. Tranny hyd pump recall before I even took it off the lot. Shoddy work, had to break it myself and replace a gasket. I could go on and on, I have had mine since 95, I like the power to weight ratio, but I think I would consider looking at something besides green.
