I have a John Deere 5325. It has the EH 3 point hitch. Recently, the hitch has stopped lifting quickly (it will take almost 2 minutes to go from the lowest point to the highest point at 1500 rpm).

Thus far, to troubleshoot, I have checked hydraulic fluid levels (it is full), changed the hydraulic filter, and had the machine running for plenty of time (to ensure that fluids are warm). I have also checked the fuses (none have burnt out).

Any ideas what might cause this type of problem?

Thanks so much.

The rockshaft hydraulic piston has a couple of O-rings on it plus there is one on the relief valve for this piston. If one of them is blown fluid can escape past it and slow down the action of the 3PH. Dose the hitch stay in position when you shut the tractor down or drop all the way down?

It seems to stay in position I believe. I have it parked tonight with the hitch up so can check it out tomorrow to be sure.

The 3 point hitch stays up overnight. Any idea what this does for the diagnosis of the problem?

Maybe check the easy stuff first. You didn't happen to inadvertently turn the little knob that governs the speed that the hitch raises and lowers to the slowest position? Although, 2 mins to raise sounds slower than the minimum setting should give you.

If you have a loader is it slow as well? When you changed the hydraulic fluid how did it look and how did the pick-up screen look? Do you see any differences if the RPM is at 1,000 compared to 2,000?

Make sure all the SCV’s are in the neutral position.

This sounds like the problem, turn the knob under the seat counter-clockwise (when facing it) a few turns and see if that doesn't fix the problem. It sounds like it is screwed just about all the way in.

I thought the knob under the seat was a rate of drop screw not a rate of raise screw.

The following was taken from tech manual for a 5X10, which I believe applies to the 5X25 as well.

Rate-of-drop valve acts as a variable orifice for oil flow through the lowering valve. With valve in the fully open position, oil travels through valve opening from passage to rockshaft cylinder to passage to lowering valve oil continues to flow back to sump through lowering valve. Rockshaft drops quickly due to large volume of oil returning to sump.

My machine has the EH controls and thus I don't think it has that knob (or at least I couldn't find it when I looked). It has a draft setting, a hitch drop rate setting, and a maximum hitch height setting. Otherwise I do not believe there is a lift speed adjustment knob but I could definitely be mistaken. Do you think that there is one somewhere?
