john deere 5200
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my tractor started. its a 1997 5200.
I replaced battery and it still wont start. It doesnt click or do anything?
Not even try to do anything. It normally starts with just a flick of the key and now nothing.
I have no idea what it is. i am a pretty good mechanic and I am stumped.
I know they wont start unless clutch is depressed and the gear shift is in park.
I am beginning to think it has something to do with the park detection sensor?
Anyone anything????:confused2:

It sounds like an electrical problem. Start with the easy stuff like are the fuses blown (fuse box and line fuse if any). If ok then get a volt meter and check if you have power at starter motor and at ignition. I am not very electrical so someone else will be able to advise further.

When you say -do anything- I take that to mean the starter does not even turn over. If that is what you mean, check the fuses (as already suggested), if they look good. It could be a safety switch problem, on your tractor I believe that is only the PTO and neutral safety switch. I do think your tractor will start in neutral as well as park.

I have attached a starter drawing for the 5x10, should be close to yours. I attached were you may find the safety switches are located.

If you do not know where the switches sometimes looking at the parts catalog helps.

Where is the fuse panel? On my 4310 it seems to get lots stuff on the back side from the fan.

Redman I think you are correct. I just dont know what it is I think it could be sensors of either pto or start switch related.
Thank you for your reply. I am going to do some searching in the wiring diagram that the other reply mentioned. I will keep you guys posted.

This is extremely helpful. I will do some snooping around here. I think its either the PTO sensor or the park sensor or something like that.
Thanks for the reply and I will keep you guys posted on what I find.

yes guys when I say it wont do anything i mean nothing. it just looks like its going to start all lights work and everything I just get nothing from turn of key. No click no nothing. I would expect it to make some sort of click or something and I got nothing.
PTO is not engaged and it just sits there. Still stumped.

What did you use the tractor for the last time you had it out? If it was to bush hogging, then I would check to see, if the wiring for the PTO and neutral switch got pulled off. These wires coming disconnect will NOT stop the tractor once it is started.

Take your volt meter and see, if you have power on both sides of the safety switches and let me know what you find out.

Cant find my stinking volt meter but the fuses are all good. As soon as I get to the volt meter I can check that.
The last time I used it we were pulling logs with it. So anything could have happened to it.

When I first started to try to crank it, it sounded like it tried to engage the starter for just a brief second and then that was it. So the battery is about 5 years old, I was pretty sure I was going to need a new one. Well after that one time engage that was all she wrote. Nothing after that. Which kinda acts like a fuse but all of them are good. I did not check all the fuses with a volt meter but rather site checked them as I said i cant find my stinking volt meter. It has power from the new battery next I am going to see if I have power at the solenoid. If I can confirm that then my guess is its the solenoid.
But it seems strange that it would try to start and then nothing.
