John Deere 5103
Today I was using the disc harrow and noticed the RPM's were fluctuating up periodically. I noticed this before while brush cutting but today seemed more evident. It would only rise but never go below from where I had the throttle arm located. Then as I pull it under the pole barn I turned the key off but the tractor did NOT turn off!!! It was just pitter-patting until it finally cut off. Can someone help me out on this? Is it air in the fuel lines or what? Thank you for all your help in advance.

Sounds like air to me. I'd start with a new fuel filter, Bleed it and see if that solves the problem. If not more diagnostics for air may be in order.

I find it hard to believe that air in the fuel is the problem. I think problem is a faulty fuel solenoid or electrical problem

It only happens periodically though. If it was the solenoid would it happen more consistently?

The reason I mentioned solenoid was difficulty in stopping engine. Another problem could be fuel restriction. How long since filter was changed? You could also check amount of fuel flow from tank.

If you have air it is compressable. After the solinoid shuts off fuel the air pressure will keep suppling fuel for a short time. Some of the old big diesels would run away if they got too much air.

Well that's one thing about air in diesel this old man never heard before that air in fuel system will cause a diesel to keep running.

The 5103 has the 2.9L 3029T engine, the fuel solenoid is part of the injection pump, lets hope that is not the problem.

Maybe one of the more experience members can comment on this thought. Just wondering if the problem is somewhere else. How is the engine oil level? Could the issue be it is getting another source of fuel and that is why it revs up from time to time and why it stays running, when turned off?

I had the tractor serviced about a month ago. Replaced all filters and fluids. After a week to two weeks Is when I noticed change in rpms. I did pressure wash the tractor though but that's not something I haven't done previously. I called the local sunsouth who serviced it. They think it is the solenoid or electrical malfunction (like a loose connection). It never stayed on after I turned the key off until yesterday during one of its fits which made me very nervous. Sometimes it runs fine but sometimes it does not. I am going to take it in soon and let them witness the very subtle rpm increase. I will let everyone know what the final verdict is but I am not a very happy camper right now. Just out of curiosity what is the cost on parts and labor for a solenoid replacement. Mechanic believes what ever it is, it should not be major.

IMO I don't think it is the solenoid. The time the tractor kept running even after i turned the key is when I tried to turn it off when it was in the middle of the rpm increase. Other then that it would always cutoff just fine. I have always put diesel in this tractor but it almost sounds like there is a hint a gasoline going through at times. It's gotta be something in the fuel, fuel lines, fuel pump or something.
