I might be able to snag a 467 baler for $13K has coveredge, all the bells and whistles. It has liek 17,000 bales thru it. That is a lot of bales. It is a 2005. I am going t go watch it bale tomorrow. They have run 13k bales thru it this year. I guess we know it works.

I am looking at baling my 100 acres of costal. A new baler like this one would run around $28K. I am not going to be making my living off it, but I don't want a piece of junk. I am going to have the JD place go thru it before I buy it - see what they think.

Any comments?

Am I crazy?

I am thinking I will be baling 500-1000 bales a year.

Thanks,
D.

I don't think that is a huge ammount of bales really, or it isn't over here. Just getting worn in ;)

Well, your the first person to say that. I wonder sometimes if I am the sucker customer. I asked my hay guy about it and he said that is too many bales. I am like - look at your baler - it has WAY more than that thru it.

My John Deere sales guy says I would love to sell you a new one, but for less than half price - this suits your needs. If you end up wanting to get out of the haying business in a yr or two, you aren't upside down - just sell it. Heck, might make some money on it.

So you are in the JD business. If I can get this thing for $13K - seems like a no brainer. Heck, the way the hay balers have been hard to get. If would have sold for $20k+ earlier this year.

I don't get where you're hay guy is coming from. Sure, the baler has worked for it's keep this year but 13,000 bales isn't extraordinary. I can't imaging how many bales or straw the big arable guys must put through there machines over here  (All of the straw from wheat is baled over here, nearly as valuble as hay)

I went out and looked at it. It makes a nice bale, but I am not impressed with the maintenace on the machine. I opened the doors on the side - they were completely full of dirt, etc. The machine had not been lubed in a while. I am going to sleep on it, but my gut is tell me to pass on it.

D, If you're looking at used balers, $13-17K will get you a very nice used baler. You can even look at the 5' models. 566 is a good one. The early 535's had trouble with netwrap but work fine with twine. Did I just make a rhyme?
Wear items include chains, hinges, bearings and pickup fingers. I've heard the belts can last a really long time.

My buddy says you've got enough HP to run a 5 footer, just make the bales about a half foot shy of full diameter capacity.

Also, maybe like boats, somewhat better deals to be had in the winter possibly???

The more I look at it, the stuff I found is probably more wear items. Coveredge is nice. It makes a nice bale - they were making hay when we went to check it out. I think I am just more **** on maintenance than most people.

I want a 4' wide bale. 4 * 5 or so. I was considered a 457 baler, but there are a lot more 467s around.

Thanks,
D.
