Hello, i have a John Deere 4430 with perma clutch. All hydraulic functions, steering, transmission, three point hitch are inoperative. My mechanic replaced the front hydraulic pump- i don't think he tested the pressure to this pump. Replacing this pump did not fix the problem. My mechanic says the next step is to check the shaft (#25 in the drawing) to see if it is driving the transmission pump. In reading the service manual, the manual says to remove the center link attaching bracket, and pull the shaft through the pump. My question is, if you pull this shaft out, is there a fitting on the end where the shaft engages the crankshaft? i am worried that by removing the shaft to inspect it, that i will not be able to get the shaft back into the fitting that engages with the crankshaft. Are part numbers 26, and 27 attached to the crankshaft housing? Thanks, Carr

There is a hex slug drove into the crankshaft on the front. The slug will not come out by removing the pump drive shaft. Items #26 & #27 are at the back of the tractor under the 3 point top link mounting base. After removing the plug, pull the driveshaft out of the rear of the tractor. It is a 3/8" diameter hex shaft. Inspect the front of the shaft (drive area) and the middle of the shaft (pump drive) for wear. You will be able to reinstall the oil pump drive shaft with a needle nose vice grips rotating the shaft during installation. The shaft will stop rotating once installed into the crankshaft drive slug. Then reinstall the plug into the back of the transmission case to retain the driveshaft.

Hyd pump drive shaft has a hex shaped end that fits in center of the engine crankshaft. IMHO any person that R&R a hyd pump without utilizing proper diagnostics should know better. Quad-range not operating correctly was a dead giveaway the trans pump or it's associated valves were at fault not the frt hyd pump.

How many hrs of use since hyd filter was changed & suction screen checked/cleaned

thanks Jim, and JD, agreed that better diagnostics would have helped isolate the problem. Maybe the drive shaft is worn, and will not drive the transmission pump. Have you ever seen a drive shaft shred pieces of metal into the transmission pump, and ruin the pump? thanks for the replies.

jim, hydraulic filter was changed about 20 hours before the problem occurred. i did not notice anything unusually bad in the filter. suction screen was cleaned / examined when the mechanic was diagnosing the recent problem. he reported that there was slimy looking hydraulic fluid on the screen. I did not see the screen. once we get the pump problem solved, we will start with new filters, and hydraulic fluid. i will be more careful with the hydraulic system in the future. i bought the tractor at auction , so i don't know the full history of maintenance on the tractor. thank you.

I suggest checking the hyd filter relief valve to be sure it's seating & not stuck open. Slimy looking oil indicates presence of water in hyd reservoir. Check to be sure hyd filler cap breather isn't clogged. After removing centerlink attachment & hex cap/o-rlng(ITEMS 26 & 27 in op's photo) briefly spin engine crankshaft by engaging starter to determine if trans pump shaft turns with engine CS. It's difficult for me to comprehend that I sold JD 4430's when they were brand NEW.

the hex shaft was found to broken right where the shaft goes into the pump. My mechanic was able to get all or the shaft out luckily. So now we have to replace the pump and the shaft. thanks for all of the advice.

Thanks for update. If I were you I get possession & store or possibly sell the original frt hyd pump. How many hours are showing on your tractors speed/hour meter?

Jim, hours show over 7,000 before the meter broke.
