John Deere 44 inch snow blower impeller speed at high idle/wide open throttle?

I am looking to find the Revolutions Per Minute speed for the impeller on the 44 inch snow blower as I am hoping to change it to an engine driven system mounted on the snow blower body with Hilliard Slip clutch with a V belt or a snowmobile clutch on the crankshaft using a wide cog gear pair and Cog belt drive as is used on snow mobiles.

Spending 4 hours to change out a V belt twice a year is getting old and its very expensive @ $180.00 a Metric V belt

I have no clue but can you measure the drive pulley on the tractor and do some calculations on the get ratio. Most JD tractors run 3300 - 3600 RPM engine speed.

the impeller should be running at engine speed, the auger should be running much slower, maybe 600 RPM or so.. wait, this is a 2 stage, right?.. auger>impeller??..

Hello Radios1,

Yes sadly it is a two stage, I wish it was a single stage with a horizontal crank engine GGGRRRR.

The belt drive is mechanical with a pulley under the engine that runs the drive belt to a second driven pulley and then to the impeller pulley through smaller snubber pulley and V belt pulley set up to a v pulley under the impeller pulley and then over the larger impeller pulley to a second guide v belt pulley and through the snubber pulley to the drive pulley.

This briggs engine is good for 3,300 RPM flat out if I remember correctly and I am looking to change the set up to a chain drive with an independent engine and 60H chain and sprockets if I can afford it this year.

It was shipped from RAD in Canada missing parts in 2011 and I did not know it until dutch 445 was kind enough to forward a JD recall sheet/parts fix sheet recently.

The things been a money pit and I know where I can purchase Belts and parts less expensively now so its a wait and see situation for now.

2 stage is good!. I'd recommend against a chain drive running at 3600 RPM though, the centrifugal force would be great at that speed, and also, keeping it oiled would be a problem too.. you should be able to drive it with a normal size, and cheap belt, 2 would be better, given the load..
