Needing help to fix a gate locking problem. My John Deere 430 that I recently purchased will not lock the gate shut. The manuel advised to install an orifice into the density control to fix the problem. It was to slow the flow I'm guessing. But the locks still won't engage. The hydraulics need to close about 4 more inches to allow for the locking spring to caught. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem in that mine won't stay locked when I'm baling and opens when a bale is half made. The big picture is that there is nothing wrong with my baler, my scv valve on the tractor leaks and lets the fluid bypass back and this allows the gate cylinders to creep open. Is there a possibilty that your problem is similar and that it has something to do with the tractor not providing the necessary pressure to shove it shut.

You may also check around the axle area and make sure that there is nothing like a wad of hay or other thing that is preventing it from closing all the way.

Is gate lock valve "opened fully"? What brand/model tractor are you operating baler on? Are belt lengths within spec's? Is gate twisted?

Ford 3600, 40 hp. The gate looks straight and I've put a new belt and two new pulleys on.

40 HP tractor is way to small even if tailgate locks unless you plan on making a 4 ft diameter bale. Are all 6 belts the correct length?????????????

I believe that even though it's important that the belts are within specifications they can be made shorter if you have done a lot of resplicing, the problem will be that you can no longer make a full six foot bale without blowing more splices apart. I know that with no hydraulic pressure that the gate lowers to within your four inches of being closed so make sure that your tractor is producing enough pressure to lift the gate which should also be enough to pull it closed and lower the cylinders to lock it closed.
That density control is a tricky thing, too far one way and it makes a large difference. Similar to adjusting how much twine, an eighth of a turn can change to a lot more wraps.Going too far may reduce your pressure to the baler drastically and leave you with a limp cylinder. I always ran mine touching the red area which put good pressure on the springs and I guess left good pressure in the lift cylinders for the gate although I'm still not convinced the two are connected in a critical way.
