Hi
I had a line rust out last year and replaced a section of it .
it was going to the front loader.
After that the line blew off and I repaired it, filled with fluid but apparently not enough because after a few days it stopped going ahead and back the way it should so I shut it down and filled it up according to the amount called for in the manual.
Then I see that the fluid turned cloudy.
I drained everything, changed filters and refilled it.
I still get the same problem.
It seems as if there is air getting in because the fluid will clear up after setting for a while.
After I drive uphill the fluid shows at the bottom end of the sight glass but clear.
I drive back down and it shows over full but cloudy.
I added fluid when it was showing low and clear until almost to the top of the sight glass.
It still goes ahead and back but every few feet it seems to do nothing for a second then goes again.
Then the fluid looks cloudy again.
There are a couple of lines still rusted a bit but it isn't leaking anywhere.
It sets on a clean concrete floor so I would notice even a drop.
Any ideas where, or if air may be getting in or any other things I should look at?
It has a little over 1200 hours on it and has had the fluids changed at or before recommended hours.
thanks

:welcome: to TBN
Sounds as if suction(supply line to pump) side is drawing in air or if it has a hose in supply side then possibly hose is collapsing.

Did you use the correct fluid when refilling after change? Possibly has fluid that is not "non foaming".

Welcome to TBN,
The "Hose", #2 in this picture is well known for cracking and allowing air to be sucked in on these (4x00 and 4x10 series) machines:

I used the hygard that it called for as well as JD filters.....what a rip off.
It was acting the same before I changed it though.
The last couple of changes I used something else and different filters because at the time I was working at a hydraulic shop.
This time I happen to be at the JD dealer for.something else and just bought what I needed there, at a cost of $100 or more than last.time.
Anyway, I will check the hoses on the suction side again.and see if I can find anything and let.you know what I find.
It's snowing here today, hope I find it soon.
Thanks.

I checked everything I could and see no cracks, leaks or anything that even looks worn as far as hoses go.
I loosened the clamps, moved the hose around a bit and re-tightened the hose #17 in the diagram....again....because it's the only one I ever had off.
It seems to run fine now but still riles the fluid so that it looks cloudy after a drive.
Maybe there is still air but it needs to work its way out?
After it sets for a short time the fluid is clear again.
Is it possible for there to be a pin hole in a steel return line from the loader that sucks in air but doesn't leak fluid?

Did you clean the suction screen?

yes, it was clean as can be and I put a new gasket even though the old one looked good.
there were no filings or dirt anywhere that I could find.
Even the old fluid was clean.

Something that may or may not have anything to do with this problem is the steering has been really hard lately until it gets warmed up.
I never had that problem with it before.
I can't find a leak anywhere si I'm wondering if there might be a vent plugged.
I had it in dragging through some pretty soft ground a while back and had a job cleaning the mud out of everything after I got it home.
Does anyone know if there is a vent on the rear end or transmission?

Then it almost has to be a suction leak somewhere in the steel line, you should check it all the way to the pump. If the line going into the pump has bolts holding it to the pump you might be able to pressue test it with air. If you have the stuff to do it, here is a good way. Make a plank plate out of something put between pump and flange of hard line. Take rubber hose off from other end and rig a way to pump air into it. You only need about 15 to 25 lbs of pressure, then spray soapy water all over the line. If no leaks it should hold the air pressure for a long while. If there is no air loss then replace all rubber hoses and reset the main filter. Don't over look even the pump sucking air.
