How do you check the glow plugs in a John Deere 4200, it was 15 below zero and I could barely get it started and it was pluged in. I'm thinking block heater is not working either.

There are no glow plugs in your 4200. It is a direct injection engine.

The 4200 has a grid heater in the intake manifold. 15 below is mighty cold, how long did you have it plugged in?

Hello Greg I see you have made two post on your question. I have given you a thorough answer in the John Deere owning/operating section, but I did not give you a long explanation on block heaters.

Block heaters need to plugged in a minimum of two hours but 4 or 6 hours will not hurt a bit in below 0F conditions. They should get pretty warm to the touch from the outside. The freeze plug mount block heater on my 97 f150 with in 4 minutes warms up to a temperature of 100 degs F on the outside. Withing 20 minutes it heats up the areas near the block heater easily.

When plugged in a block heater should make a hissing sound like a coffee maker warming up to make coffee.

The do work very efficiently when plugged in when an engine has just been shut off! They can maintain a warm coolant temperature over night if this makes sense to you.

Also you may need winter fuel. Do not trust the fuel at the pump!! When I worked at a Fortune 500 company they did not trust winter blend pump fuel we still added winter additives to thin out, increase the cetane number, and make the fuel much easier to combust for the first start on a very cold day.

If possible keep your tractor in a garage or shed. A CUT 4200 should fit in most automotive garages without issues

Thanks for the reply diesel lover, I do have it in a pole barn ( no heat, seams colder in the barn? ) I don't use it very often so I don't want to keep it pluged in a lot, not sure of the watts. Might cost a lot, but if thay have a 4 minute heater I'm going to get one. Thanks again

You may have water in the line. I used my tractor a week ago for several hours, stopped for lunch and when I tried to restart nada. Checked the sediment bowl, no water. This also happened three years ago. It seems that just enough water can collect in head of the sediment bowl/valve to stop you in your tracks. A heat gun to the sediment bowl got me running again. I also put in some diesel 911, no problems since.
