I was looking over the specs for each of these balers, and the Jd requires 35hp and the nh requires 75 hp. Does anyone have any experience with both? Im looking at buying a baler this year, and have ran the 347 (348), but not the new holland 575. They both are 14X18 balers, so Im not sure why the NH requires so much more horse power. Thanks.

The JD says it will run on 35 hp as that is what it says for all its balers. To get max capacity out of it you need to power it similar to the NH.

I would love to hook the Massey 135 up to my 575 some day to see if it could even start to turn that baler. If it did I would be surprised as the 575 takes some power to just get started. But once she is started...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The 575 calls for a min of 75pto hp (this is without having the 72 thrower on it, that brings the min up some). I know for a fact you can run the 575 on 50 pto hp but that is the minimum I would go and you will not set any records with that small a tractor running it. Ideally you would have a 90-100 hp tractor in front of the 575 as it loves that size tractor. Around here it is not uncommon to see 150 pto hp tractors hooked to the 575's with throwers.

I do think the main reason the 575 takes so much power is its capacity. It will eat hay like that little japanese guy eats hot dogs. There is no stopping it with the right tractor in front.

I do wonder how much the auger limits the JD's capacity compared to the NH. The NH is all open and the tines come down from the top to stuff the hay over so I have had the entire mouth filled and the bales spitting out the back when rain was coming. She will spit bales like crazy if you open her up but the bale does not look as nice but it is still better then getting rained on. I am hoping to get up and visit my friends farm when they are baling with their JD's. Hopefully I will get the time to run one of their 348's to see how it handles compared to the 575.

Both balers are great balers but I don't think I would want anything smaller then 90 horses in front of either one if you plan to take advantage of these machines.

I'd like to know what the difference is between the new holland BC5060 balers and the older ones. I only run about 2000 / year and need a baler. Only other one I could buy was a NH315. Any ideas welcome. Thanks for your time.

Your question is a good example why threads should locked to replies & be "only readable".

Due to JD 348 being in title of this thread I suggest you start your own thread.

IMHO pickup belt is easier to R&R & JD baler is simpler to time if needed on JD 348 than any NH small sq baler

Personal opinion but then the 575 I just sold on TH, never came out if time in all the years I owned it....and the 575 will eat hay like no other square bailer.

IIRC in a previous thread you also stated 575 was gearbox powered with no chains which was incorrect. I read that those Hesston/MF balers that follow behind tractor will bale the most bales per hour of any brand small sq baler

Never had an inline so I have no idea and the 575 went to a new home and I got 13K for it, no more small squares here. Far as my comment about no chains, I was incorrect and stated that. The knotter drive was by shaft but the power transmission from the enclosed gearbox that also powers the plunger was a short roller chain, just behind the flywheel. Only advantage to an inline I see is with either a kicker and wagon or a bale gathering system like the Kuhns unit. None of which are germane to me as I don't do idiot cubes any more. Don't ever plan on it either.

There's a lot more feet of of chains on a NH 575 than 1 chain. I count 5 chains of which 2 chains have 80 pitches each, another chain has 94 pitches & another chain has 66 pitches. JD 348 has only 2 chains(70 & 86 links)
