A good place to start is here:https://jdparts.deere.com/servlet/com.deere.u90.jdparts.view.publicservlets.HomeUnsigned

About half way down on the left side is a link for the JD on-line parts catalog. It will help show where parts are located and how they go together. I looked and saw that your tractor has two possible engines in it. Didn't look to see if the regulators were the same or not.

I'm not familiar with the 318. I was thinking you had a larger tractor with a engine more like vehicles have. I'm still learning myself on the smaller engines. I have a couple older pieces of equipment I'm trying to repair so I'll be reading and learning too.

I would recommend checking out the JD site I linked to as I know some of the newer stuff has on-line manuals you can download. Older ones like mine require purchasing a repair manual, but I still recommend having access to a manual. It can really help.

I'm sure someone will jump in shortly with better advice for replacing the regulator. There's alot of small tractor owners out there who do their own repairs.

Looks like they all use TM1590 for the techincal manual and TM1590CD for the manual on CD. $90.00 through Deere for the manual and $45.00 for the CD. I didn't find an on-line version.

steve you did not say how you determined you need the regulator/rectifier. by what i can see you jd 318 has what is called a permanent magnet alternator which means it has no internal parts except for magnets that do run north and south and when the rotor spins it creates power. these system had 2 types of reg/rect combos both are in 1 piece with a wiring harness attached. one came mounted to the back of the magnet alternator the other was mounted generally under the dash area looks the a small metal box with wiring harness that plugs in on the model that was built onto the back of magnet alternator generally had 2 spade molded terminal that went to wiring harness. the best way to install the external is to disconnect "-" cable un-mount reinstall ready to go also keep in mind these sysytem either one only puts out enough power to keep battery charged maybe 15 to 20 amps tops. post which one you have can help you find it .

thanks
