Guys,

My 310c has recently developed a problem. When it is started for the first time(it's cold) it will start and run for 30 seconds. If a restart is tried it will start and run for 10 seconds. I have changed the fuel pump and fuel filter with no help from my 100 bucks. The voltage to the injector pump is 12v after it shuts off it is at 0v I tried running a wire directly from the batt to the injector pump and it still stops running. I can hear the solenoid engage when I supply 12v

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Looks like you have a Standadyne injection pump. These pumps need a free return for fuel overfow. They usually have some form of relief valve or return side restrictor in order to maintain proper case pressure. If the return becomes blocked, case pressure builds until it meets transfer pressure. At this point the movement of the pumping plungers becomes restricted and the engine simply dies. When case pressure reduces, the engine will restart and run until the condition returns, usually in a much shorter time span. Try removing the return line from the top of the pump, start the engine and see if fuel seems to exit the fitting reasonably freely or not, and does the engine continue to run, or die as before. If your problem is supply or starvation, the engine will not start back up quickly after it dies, it will crank and stumble for a while. If you have constant voltage to the pump shutoff coil during all this it's probably not electrical. The coils don't usually fail in the manner you described, they either work or they don't.

Harry,

Due to 60 mph winds yesterday I did not get out to the beast... I did however make it out there tonight and pulled the return line off and had good flow from the tank and no flow from the pump while running. So I saw that there was an adapter from the housing to the line. I pulled that adaptor off and found a one way ball check valve and it was pluged up.. I ran the tractor with the ball vale off and had good flow. I got it cleaned out and wall-la you are a hero. She is back to purring like a kitten.....

Thank you so much for the help. I am sure you just saved me a few hundred bucks.....

Hi Harry, I had a fuel issue with my '86 jd 310c. Fuel filter was fine and fuel is always treated when filling. I typed in JD310c fuel problems and it brought me to this website and your reply to motobro 3/12/2012 for same issue. I removed the return line off injector pump blew back to fuel tank, aok. Then I removed the fitting that goes into the top of the pump, it was clogged with small debris. blew it out. On this piece the bottom where it goes into the pump is glass with a small metering hole beside small glass circle. i Found this out when i tried to push a small bit through the hole, glad i didn't force it. The tractor runs fine now, back to full power. Thank you for the advice you wrote. John310c

This information really helped me out our 310c did the same thing ran very bad at first then would not stay running at all after that. Cleaned out the return line on top of the fuel pump and works perfect. Easy 10 minute fix thanks everybody

Our 310a has a similar problem. We've done everything suggested above with no good result. When we pulled the check valve for the return the tractor ran maybe 10 seconds longer, but that's it. No flow out the return with the valve out.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Does your tractor have good fuel flow out of tank to inj pump?

Have you attempted running engine with fuel control solenoid removed from inj pump?
