Tick,
I have not found any place on the internet to find reasonable prices listed. www.tractorshed.com has a section showing purchase price people have paid and the year purchased. The prices seem to be very low compared to what I would expect to pay here in the east. The 2440 is a great tractor and if in decent condition will last a very long time. You may want to check out the discussion forum (john deere) at www.tractorshed.com and do a search for 2440. You can probably learn everything you are looking for. You can buy all the manuals from John Deere. I have the 800 # somewhere if you need it. Buying the manuals on CD is much cheaper than the printed version. You can buy all the parts for the 2440 also from Deere. I have a 301-A which is a similar tractor and I love it. Mine was built in Iowa, but the 2440 was built in Germany. As far as price goes, you could call a couple of different JD dealers and get a price from them, there is also price books you can buy from Amazon and the like, and you could also get on www.machinefinder.com and do a search for 2440's. Good luck and keep us posted. I am not an expert, but if you have any questions shoot them this way and I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge.

Tick,
$17,500 does sound very high for a 2440. If it was mint I would think $9,000-$10,000 would be the most anyone would pay for one. If it is rough I would think $3,000-$4,000 would be a good starting point. Good luck in your search.
We had a 2440 to run a grape harvester. Great tractor. We also used it as a loader tractor. Had 16.9x30 tires on it. Well built machine. Lots of power in small package.
I stopped to speak with the seller about the tractor and price. It's been completely overhauled front to back and has new tires all the way around, and he's firm on the price. I had to pass, thought if I could get it for $9500.00 or so, I'd pick 'er up. If it's still there in a couple of months, maybe I'll try again. Thanks for all the help.
