I took on a small project of restoring this old 24-b planter so I could plant sweet corn and a few other things. It was rusted pretty bad but after a lot of wire brushing and some rust reformer and enamel paint it turned out pretty good. It has most of the hill drop parts but its missing the large gear that goes on the side of the seed hopper for that. It also has the pea and bean hopper inside the large hopper but I dont have the right plates for that. I guess it takes some sort of plate? I do have a few plates for corn and soybeans and they work pretty well. This thing was rigged everyway you can emagine, I must have taken 1lb of bent nails and bailing wire off of it!

This planter is obviously old school so I have a few questions maybe you all can help me with.

What plate numbers do you use for field corn, soybeans and sweet corn "Incredible."

Does anyone know if the dry fertilizer attachement and knife opener are still available from JD or any other sources?

How do you detach and reattach the steel detachable chain? It has both the #32 and #25 sizes which I can buy in 10' lengths but for the life of me I cannot figure out how it is taken apart and put back together.

The plates are determined by seed size. Some seed distributors publish the seed plate size for their seeds or you can measure and size accordingly.
As for the chain it slides apart to the side. Fold the chain 90 degrees and slide it to the side. As for parts I would think that you could get them at a dealer of on the web.

Thanks for the advice on the chain, I don't know how I didn't notice that. I had to use a punch and large ball pin hammer but it got the job done. I got to plant a 1/2 acre of sweet corn yesterday with the old planter and it sure beat the heck out of doing it by hand! Its a little touchy to keep it straight and in the middle of the row but still it worked great.
