John Deere 2120 3pt Arms Drop When Using front End Loader

Hello Everyone,

Is it normal for the 3pt arms to drop when operating the front end loader? New rockshaft seal kit was done on the 3pt piston housing. New spools and seats as well since I was there.

To be honest, I don't recall the arms dropping before, but I never really tested it like I just did after rebuilding the rockshaft housing.

Let me know what your experience with this is.

If I read this right, you also redid the 3140 seals, etc. according to your other "hissing" thread.

Do you think your rebuild problems may be related, as are having problems with both tractors ?

3 pt arms dropping while activating other hyd function(FEL control valve) indicates that your tractor has a large leak in the 3 pt hyd circuit which could be valves,valve seals &/or rockshaft piston seals. Problem could be as simple as RS valves control linkage adjusted too tight. The valve clearance can be adjusted from outside by removing a plug. Have you attempted changing L/D control lever under seat to a different location??

I've rebuilt them both with JD rockshaft seal kit. Changed out the spools and seats with brand new ones from JD as well. I seem to be having different symptoms with both the 3140 and the 2120. I think the 3140 might simply have to much oil in it. For this thread on the 2120, I think you are on to something. Upon having the 3pt arms raised while using the tractor to spread manure, I started to hear a whining noise that appeared to get louder and louder. I then went to undo a chain I had that keeps the arms tight so they dont get caught in the wheels before lowering them below the PTO shaft of the manure spreader. As I was moving the arms side to side the whining noise would change. I then lowered the arms and the whining stopped. I then raised them back up to see if I can figure it out and moved the load control up and down a few notches and again the pitch changed. I think it you are right, it has to do with that screw being to loose or tight.

How would I know which way I need to turn it or what is the proper way to test it as I turn the screw in or out? Other than the noise factor, should there be a physical reaction that I can observe either by having more of a neutral spot in moving the 3pt lever up or down or? Just need help on what to look for here when adjusting the screw.

I'd recommend to put L/D lever in "D" or "min" which ever applies, If load control mechanism is adjusted correctly then this setting locks out any auto control. I can't remember exactly how to set clearance on valves but I remember turning screw is similar to taking Ex-lax "a little bit can go a long way"! Turning screw(key 9) CW increases clearance of beveled area between screw & cam((key 7) and vice-versa. To access screw one must remove plug on RH side of rockshaft housing. Do you have access to a JD 2120 tech manual?? 3 pt internal adjustments are outlined in JD TM.

Would the issue I'm describing be a symptom of it being to tight or to loose for those spoolers?

You were right Tx Jim. Only needed about a half turn and the hissing stopped. All good now, thank you for the advice.
