1958 John Deere 820
Found lots of diesel in oil. Has been draining for 5 days with the oil plug out. Drips about an ounce of diesel in 24 hours. What is the cause?

Welcome to TBN
My guess is fuel transfer pump seal(key 30) is leaking. One needs tractor serial number for correct part # of seals

Only 2-3 places it CAN come from..
Supply pump> seals went bad
Injection pump> front seals bad {my guess}
Injectors> leaking

U can remove the supply pump & block off the outlet port w/ your finger & blow some compressed air in the inlet port & SEE if the seals are leaking.. U can spray some dish soap on the seals & IF they ARE leaking, it'll make bubbles..
IF its not the supply pump, its gotta be the inj. pump seals..
On THAT ENGINE doesn't the inj. pump sit on its nose.?? Up & down.??
Where most others mount, side ways..
Its ALWAYS a good idea to have a working shut-off valve at the tank & USE IT when u part the tractor.!!!
Gravity can play h*ll.. on that fuel system set-up.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Found a shut off valve under the tank and it works....Nice. I'm a complete noob when it comes to tractors. Trying to keep an heirloom alive. I,m not afraid to dig into this. I'll find a manual and a parts source first. Any good sources?

You're welcome. Have you considered JD for manual & parts? After more thought on my part there's no need to know your tractor's SN. The seals are 2 ea-AR395R Seal - ADD 11.98 USD & 1 ea-R1539R Gasket - ADD 10.79 USD from JD.

IMHO if fuel pump has any fuel in it holding finger over hole & blowing compressed air in pump could cause fuel to get pushed under one's skin which isn't a good thing & possibly get one a trip to ER.
