John deere 1420 front mower

Our local tractor dealer (NH) has a john deere 1420 with a Yanmar Gas engine (odd?) and a 72 inch deck on it. 850 hours about, I heard that it came from the local university, which I believe.

I can't find much about these online, other then it's part of john deere's commercial series. My dad wants to trade our old cub lowboy on it. We mow roughly 14-15 acres twice a week. We currently have a gravely zero turn that has 700+ hours on it and we use a pull behind mower on our massey 240S - but we've been using the massey for brush hogging and such more and more, less finish cut.

Anyone have any reviews on the 1420?

They're pretty sweet units. The Yanmar gas is based off of their diesel line. They're designed to run all day every day. A very capable machine and they take attachments too. Snow blower, blade, broom, hard and soft cabs, and MCS. I wouldn't think twice about buying one, I've seen several with 4000+ hours.

we just took delivery on a 2002 1420 with 1900 hours on it. The unit was well maintained but used none the less. The only real indications of wear on the machine are the seat cover and the floor mat is worn a little. The machine's fittings are all still green. None of the paint has been rubbed off of any nuts, bolts, screws, hoses, anywhere! That means for the past almost 2000 hours and 12 years, the only maintenance required was oil changes and tune ups. That says a lot about these machines. I wouldn't want the enclosed cab unless all I was going to do was blow snow. Logic: we mow grass during summer months. That means hot weather. No A/C? No thanks! We have an aftermarket fiberglass canopy for sun shade ordered. The machine has a 72" deck that I'd like to trade for a 60" unit but only because of the irregularities in our lawn areas. Otherwise, I guess the quality and engineering speak for themselves. I wouldn't think twice about buying one!
