John Deere 3150
Hey everyone. I've been looking at discbines off and on for a couple years now. I've ran across a John Deere 1326 discbine that seems to be in really good shape all the way around. All the discs turn easily with maybe 1/8 in play at most in each one. No leaks in the gearbox, and driveline is nice and tight. Did these older models use the Kuhn cutterbars as well? And the price is $3000 firm. What's your take on this for the price? And can it be pulled with 65hp in thick grass hay?

One must use extreme caution when buying a used hay cutter as they are often abused and are costly to repair. I'm fairly sure that the 1326 cutterbar is the Kuhn design. I think 65 hp will be on the low side for hp.

My 12' 1470 requires minimum 75HP, that's good the discs turn easily and that there is hardly any play in them, those are pluses for the Discbine, things to check also, condition of teeth, belt, and conditioner. If your not sure of history then it wouldn't hurt to change all the fluids that way you know there is enough fluid in it and you can see the condition of inside gearboxes based on what's coming out. I paid $4500 for mine so $3000 seems to be a good price.

These older models with the one piece cutter bar are expensive to repair and 65 as already stated is low on power.

Yeah I've heard the older models with one piece cutterbars are expensive to repair. The only reason I was even looking at this particular machine was I do know the history and the price seemed reasonable. I'm probably still gonna go with the Kuhn FC 243 TG. It claims to only require 62hp minimum. I have a JD 3150 that I know will pull it, but I'm really wanting to try and use my Ford 5610 for reasons of being convenient to leave it hooked to same machine all year since I bale with my 3150.

Does the Ford have a cab?

Disk mowers tend to send stones flying every now and then. I know our cab gets hit about once a year, don't know how with the curtain and all the grass in the way. I know my friends brother wouldn't sell him his used one unless he bought a cab tractor.

No it doesnt have a cab but with the canopy a Plexiglas windshield should be fairly cheap to rig up I would think

I understand the benefits of a cab for noise, dirt & pesky insects including the stinging insect protection BUT I can't see the glass stopping many rocks being thrown by a disc cutter. PS the windows & doors are expensive.

they will stop the rocks but door glass costs nearly 500 dollars each.i have bought 6 already on my 2 cab hay tractors.

We have a Deere 6605 and it takes a hit on the rear window at least once a year, and the side window has also been hit. The rear has a couple of chips in it and the side did break once. How the rear has taken it and not broke I don't know. I know the sound it makes and I would not want to get hit in the head by the objects that have hit the rear window. The glass is tempered and crumbles when it breaks. It seem to be stronger than regular glass and the object that broke the side window just dropped straight down onto the fender and bounced just into the cab. All of it's forward motion was stopped.

I don't remember if it was Deere or not, but at least one MFG under requirements listed cab tractor on their disk mowers. That was a while ago though. I could see possibly a 3 pt hitch mower the rear wheel blocking and maybe not needing a cab. Not a trailed mower though, which is what our is, Deere 920.

PS: I know the door and window glass is expensive, better to replace them than be struck in the head or lose an eye.
