Good day from South Africa. Is there a difference between a John Deere 1209 and 1219. I know the 1219 is newer. Anything to look out for when buying one?

ALWAYS CHECK the wobble box mounting frame for cracks or welding repairs. If repaired or cracked I'd walk(RUN) away. Later model had splined instead of hex shafts that powered conditioner rollers. This caused less wear(slop) in shafts and made for easier timing of the rollers. Tongues on 1219 had improved attaching points. Axle on 1219 & 1209(SN> 285,001) utilized one lift cylinder with a transport lock instead of the master/slave cylinders on earlier models.

I guess you were just unlucky!! They're were 1000's of 1209/1219 Mo-Co's that cut 1000's of acres of hay with no wobble box problems.

I had 2 1209's over the years. Both well worn but usable. I found that the bolt that attaches the cutter bar to the wobble arm had to be the 150 ft-lbs specified in the manual. My later one had the single cylinder as TX. Jim mentioned. A manual may be available on ebay. I have bought manuals from reputable sellers and they were just as specified by the seller on farm equip. Probably has one on the cutter. Good idea to get it as it will tell you how to setup the bar and that can make your satisfaction with your cutter much higher.

One thing I like about the 1209s I had was the exposed drive shaft. I had a New Holland that had the drive encased and you couldn't get to the rear zerk on the drive line to grease it. I finally just torched a hole in the side of the thing to get at the U-joint. I ran my ground clearance skids all the way down to help me in keeping some height to the stubble. I usually planted a sorghum cross for hay and it needed 4 or so inches to get decent regrowth.

I don't remember if I've seen the side cover(parts key #6) broken or not but if I did it wasn't very often.
