John Deere 1050
I have a 1986 John Deere 1050. When lowering or raising the 3pt hitch it will not stop at the desired height. To explain further; if I raise the lever, it will continue to raise to max height unless I bump the lever down about half an inch. Once I do that the attachment will stay in place. When lowering it the same thing occurs. I have made all of the adjustments that I can think to make with no positive results. If anyone has any suggestions they are greatly appreciated.

Actually, it could be any one of a number of things. Or could be a lot of any number of things now that you've adjusted it. The position control valve uses flow pressure along with sensor valves to maintain the height of the linkage. It also regulates the maximum pressure pushing back against your hydro pump. Usually is set for 2000 psi. The control valve may have a bad O-ring. Or the lift piston seal may be leaky causing the control valve to keep feeding oil to the cylinder thinking that it hasn't reached proper height. Now whatever it is has been compounded by changing the linkage sensor adjustments. BTW, those adjustments need to be performed in a certain sequence and really, without a service manual, I wouldn't touch it. Welcome to the forum;)

Fawken,

I am new to the farming and tractor world. However, I do have a service manual and I am fairly mechanically inclined. the O-ring in the control valve appears to be the easiest place to start. Do you have any suggestions as to where I should start to fix this? Thanks for the input

Yep, control valve is the place to start. Do you have like a drop speed control knob under the seat? You can raise the linkage and close that valve, turn engine off and arms should stay up. If they slowly go down it's the piston seal. If they stay up, most likely the control valve. Glad you have a service manual. Even so if you do go into the control valve make sketches and notes. The service manuals I've seen do not illustrate all that well on how it all goes back together.

I will test the piston seal and move to the control valve if it checks ok. Thanks again

Good luck. BTW, I'm giving you my input based on my experience with my Ford. They should be similar though- both Japanese from the same general era.

You better oil up your feedback rod if it has one before you start taking things apart.
