John Deere 1020 pto losing power

I have a 1974 John Deere 1020 diesel tractor. When I turn the pto on, it starts but then loses power. It will not turn the bushhog. The lift works good. What could be the problem?

I'm not sure where to start. Any advice?

First the last 1020 Deere was made in 1973 if you look this model up on TractorData.com - information on all makes and models of tractors there is a serial number list that you can use to determine your year properly. Next is to figure out which pto type you have as 1020's had a few options. If you are not sure which pto type you have themn post pics of the controls so we can help you figure it out. Once that is done we can try to help you figure out what to look at next.

Does your tractor have a pto control handle with a yellow knob between the 2 gearshift handles? Sounds as if pto clutch is slipping.
