John Deer 2305 brake lock

The park brake lock lever has broken & we have sourced a new lever. However it looks like the plastic cover is broken where this pin (pictured) fits so it cannot work.
Is there a smart solution to this?

Getting a new wimpy plastic cover seems to be a waste of effort. I would lean towards the one person that was asking about pop riveting fender washers to support the tabs. I may form aluminum pieces on each side that get epoxied and riveted in place and use a longer pin. !/8" aluminum can still be hammered to form it pretty easily.
