Since the rod coming into it is for brake I'd say the gizmo is part of the brake.

It is the thrust block for the ring gear.

What’s it’s purpose? I’ve rebuilt several car and truck diffs but never seen anything like this.

It is meant to give additional support to the ring gear. Extra anti-deflection support, usually only found on floating axle diffs.
