Jinma 284LE Overheating

My water pump went and I replaced the water pump and thermostat. Before my water pump went out the temp gauge read about 70 even when mowing. After cleaning, flushing and refilling I started it and no matter how long it idled the temp wouldn稚 get above 50. When I start driving and mowing the temp heats up and keeps going. I stopped mowing when it got to about 95 then let it idle and it came back down again. Then I drove it back to the garage. I thought it might be a faulty thermostat but I would think it would heat up in idle also. I did tighten the sensor originally because I thought it was leaking. Did that before I realized it was the water pump leaking. Any help would be appreciated.

I assume you are talking 70C. That is about right at 160F. I think 50 , 120F is too low. My tractor runs right at 80C, or about 175F. This is where these tractors like to run.

I would check your belt tension and look for positive flow in the radiator. If you have both of them covered check the T-Stat again and if that is fine look for a head gasket issue from overheating.

Check your oil for traces of water and the radiator for traces of oil.

Sounds like the replacement thermostat you bought was the wrong temperature range. If you don't have the box it came from anymore, take the receipt to the parts store and ask them for the temp range of that SKU. If that's not possible, remove the thermostat and see what temp is stamped on it. You'll usually find it either on the flange, or underneath on the brass sensor.

It's not unusual for a diesel to never reach operating temp at idle. Most of the time you have to work them to actually the thermostat to open. After that, typical operating temps for pre-EPA diesels are 80C for off road, 85C for onroad.

I bought the thermostat from a dealer of chinese tractors. With the previous 2 thermostats I bought it would get up to 70 to 80 while idling. What I don't understand if the thermostat was bad why it wouldn't overheat or even heat up while idling. I will have to check the thermostat when I get home.

You said it heat sup when mowing, but not when idling. Have you checked to make sure your radiator fins are free of chaff and dust from mowing? That can sure make a difference on these tractors. Mine won't get fully warm at idle, either. Under load it hits 85C and stays there as long as the radiator is clean.

I imported and sold many of the Jinma units. The biggest problem I had with the over heating was due to people not cleaning out the flutes fulling on the radiator. You should be able to pull out the debre shield in front of the radiator and be able to see through 80% of the radiator and see your fan. If you can not see your fan through the radiator flutes it's going to run hot.

If you have already replaced the water pump, the thermostat, temp sending unit, checked fan belt, and did everything possible, you may have a bad head gasket.

I have seen the battery mounted in front of the radiator on some of the Jinma factory tractors. This blocked about 1/3 of the air flow thru the radiator. Have they corrected that problem on the later models? Ken Sweet

I called where I got the parts from to see if they had any suggestions. He said it wouldn't hurt to run it into the red briefly and it should be boiling over but it wasn't. No fluid loss from before when I tested it either. Drove it in 2nd gear about 1800 rpm with no implements running and it still would overheat. I think it might be the sensor but any ideas would be appreciated.

I had a temperature gage problem and replaced it with a mechanical temp gage. When hot, I'd CAREFULLY release the radiator pressure, remove the cap, and insert a digital thermometer into the coolant to see what the real temperature is.

Verified it is overheating last night. To verify it isn't the thermostat I'm going to remove it and see if it still overheats. If it isn't the thermostat is it pointing to the head gasket?
