I have a JD855 and just bought a 60" belly mower for it. Here's the problem, the belly mower came off a JD755 and the PTO driveshaft is too short.

What are my options here;

1) JD dealer says the correct part is AM101860 for a whopping $325.00. (I paid $350 for the whole mower!) JDParts website says that the driveshaft is particular to the 855, not sure if this is correct or not.

2) Tractor supply store has a square shaft and it's mate for $160. I could cut it down and remount the front and back yokes.

3) Is there any companies out there that could lengthen the driveshaft I have??

4) Is there anyone out there that has the driveshaft I need and wants to sell it. Have checked Ebay, no luck yet.

The mower serial is MO2732X595834

Thanks,
Phil

The driveline is 2100 rpm so I'd stick with the same type of shaft. Any imbalance will wear the mid-pto bearing. What is the estimated fully collapsed length ogf the shaft you need? As a matter of fact, I do happen to have a spare mid-pto shaft used on my 1070 mid-mower which I have also shared with my F-935 mower (also 2100 rpm). These 2 shafts are different lengths but work ok.

I'd suggest you first try to put a collar and an extension on the gearbox shaft. Its just a round bar, nothing splined, on my 72 mowers. The splined end is on the transmission side. A good tight fitting collar with a stub shaft on it could give you several inches of free prop-shaft room. Another option is to relocate the mower more rearward. There are quite a few different front hangers for these mowers in order to clear tires, etc. This also includes different "pork chops" for the tractor siderails which the main mower drag links attach to. These bracketts have a half dozen holes in them for adjusting F/A mower position. In fact, my 1070 has 2 sets of drop brackets. One goes on the tractor frame, the 2nd set goes onto these brackets. These are just 5/8" steel plates....

You can buy extenders that compensate for short pto driveshafts. I have one on my Yanmar RS1200 rototiller. In this photo you can see the pto shaft, the slip clutch and that extender that's attached to the splined shaft on the rototiller. I bought it at Tractor Supply for $15-20. Hope this helps.

This is not a 540 6 spline propshaft. No extension parts I ever found for this 16? spline deal.

Thanks guys,

I didn't know about an extender, and that seems like a good way to go. I will look into it on Tuesday when I get over to Tractor Supply.

Piloon, thanks for the website. I'll check with them too.

zzvyb6, I am not sure how to measure the shaft. Should I give you the complete, end-to-end measure, including the input and output yokes or just the collapsable shaft in both positions? Ideally, I'd like to just buy a correct and complete shaft then resell the one I have, but the extender seems like a good way to go too.

Thanks,
Phil

TSC will NOT have anything to extend the Mid-PTO shaft, You will likely need to have one made at a machine shop.

OK Guys,

I've done a bit of calling and running around town to try and find info on the driveshaft and adapter. Here is what I found.

Nobody has a shaft adapter for a 1" 15 spline shaft. Seems it's a bit of an albatros. I have a few more places to call, but so far I am 0 for about 7 on the adapter.

The complete driveshaft I need is definitely an AM101860. Per John Deere the compressed length is 25.638", the extended length is 30.598", this represents the measure of the complete shaft, end-to-end. It's a 1" 15 spline and a series 14 unit. If ANYONE has one of these, I'm interested!

The shaft I have is a AM107599. The compressed length is 16.090" and the extended length is 20.630". I may be selling this one if I can't find an PTO shaft adapter.

I have a call into a friend of mine who is a machinist. He may be able to fabricate something for me on the gearbox end. BTW, one of the salesmen I talked with today said it doesn't matter which end you put the adapter on.
