Purchased a used '07 JD790 with 325 hours on it three weeks ago and I'm performing all the scheduled maintenance tasks and becoming familiar with its operation.:) The picture shows the CUT before I took off both the 419 Loader and 60 inch Mid Mower to install the retro kits I purchased that are needed for a JD 59 inch snow blower (another future thread). I've read allot about the need for proper ballast in an existing thread to keep the stress off the 4WD front axle and want to ensure I understand what's on the JD790 now and if I have to add anymore, etc.

 One problem though, I can't identify what's installed or each ring's weight (two on each rim). I've been searching the internet and so far no luck, the dealership that sold me the machine didn't have records for them. Any assistance would be appreciated. THANKS

I believe they are weights that were originally sold for 750's. The first (starter) weight is listed as 42 pounds and each additional weight is listed as 48 pounds.

The wheel weights look nice and probably are helpful under normal tractor use. If you put much in the bucket I believe an impliment or ballast on the back is best. I have been experimenting with my deere and have a balance w/o a heavy load in the bucket. The seesaw effect is felt on a hill going up backward the tire or tires come up off the ground. With only two weights on my wheels that does not happen. The hill is steep and the hydro fluid flows fwd and the pump runs dry but the tires stay on the ground.

I recommend you reverse your tires for max width on the rear per operator's manual.

HIMMMMM...........:confused: I'll have to pull out the o'ld manual, sounds simple but I'm mechanically challenged and nothing's easy. W/O looking it up I suspect I will have to remove & re-mount these weights....I better pull-out the steel toed saftey boots....Ooooppppsss there goes the toes.... One last aspect, wheels out further than the 59 inch blower if I do that, I'll investigate and take necessary action. Thanks for the insight and recommendation, I want to do all I can to extend the life of this tractor..........

jd110, Looks like I actually have three weight components, the starter and two additional rings = 138 lbs. on each rear wheel (see attached PIC)

Fuseboxer, still looking at reversing these rims.........

Stability for the cost of a little work, I just did mine and feel very good looking at the back tires farther apart. Any chance you can reverse yours w/o removal of the weights. Looks like you have room. Your weights on the inside of the rim if their is clearance and you are comfortable with it. Taking the weights off is easy. I worried about the tires 250lb for a JD4410 tire/rim. My weights are salvage from a field 2miles away. Neighbor stated they are off of a New Holland. Bolt up and fit perfect. 4 @ 65lb=260. cost 100. total. I am happy as a rat with cheese. I would not want rimguard I do not pickup much superheavy material. If I do I will put an impliment on the 3pt.

Make sure you are not making your tractor tires closer together by reversing the rims and puting them on opposit sides. Someone may have already widened your profile. Normally when the valve stem is inside the rim you are at max width and stabililty.

Fuseboxer, I've researched your recommendation and understand what you're saying and it's doable however, my quest to get the rear ballast weight right for the 419 Loader and soon to received JD 59 inch Snow Blower was prompted by this thread:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-owning-operating/171692-jd-790-front-end-problems.html

that is, trying to prolong the front 4WD axle components by relieving any stress. Since my acres and driveway are flat, as in really flat and you can see for miles, stability is not an issue since I'm very careful after reading the link above and being new to the machine. If things change in the future then I will re-consider the reverse direction of the rims. One last item, when I measured the current configuration the outter width of the wheels are at 54 inches and I believe if I did the reverse they'd go beyond the 59 inch snowblower's cut. I appreciate the information on the rims, I didn't understand they could be reversed until looking to see how the rims can be seperated from the center hubs and flipped.
