I'm rebuilding (or just cleaning) the carburetor in my deere 757 with kawasaki 25hp air cooled engine, and when I went to remove it, found this hose (key#1 in pic) attached to the top of the carburetor, but the other end is not connected to anything. The engine does not currently run (I just bought it, wasn't running, was told it did but hasn't been started in several years). I was able to get it to run briefly using starting fluid, but that's it. The hose is clear colored (now amber). Does anyone with a kawasaki motor know if this is normal for that hose to go nowhere? At first I thought it was a breather tube, but it has grime except at the very tip, like it used to be connected to something. Also, if it is a vacuum hose that's disconnected, could explain hard/no starting. Anyone?

We have a 757 at work. I will try to remember and look at it.

Maybe positive crankcase ventilation tube. And yes a vacuum line disconnected can cause too lean a mixture and hard starting.

I have several Kawi's on various JD machines with the clear tube that goes nowhere. It is a breather/overflow tube.

If you can, that would be awesome. It's right under the air cleaner. The top of the carburetor has 2 hoses connected to it. This is one and the other goes to the fuel pump so there won't be any searching. The only thing is that the air cleaner base has to be unbolted to see or it may be possible to peek or feel underneath. It don't think it's a PCV hose because it's only a 1/4" or 5/16" tube. Never seen a PCV hose that skinny nor did I see a PCV valve either.

Posted the other reply too quickly I guess. This is great info RG1. Now I won't be forever bothered wondering whether something was left disconnected. The only thing that made me think it was originally connected is that the hose has grime all around except at the very end, like it was plugged into a nipple or something. Thanks again, you guys are awesome. Should have this carb cleaned up and hopefully get this guy running soon. I need to put it to work.

I've owned, and still own several Kawi's, though I'm no be all, end all an expert on them. Yours could be indeed in need of plugging into something, but I'd be surprised if it did. The end that is clear/clean may have been the end that was originally plugged into the carb output nipple. My JD 21' WB's all have that clear tube coming out of the carb, and like I said, it is a breather tube. My FX850 doesn't have one that I can see anywhere, but that doesn't mean that it isn't up under the airbox somewhere. I have had no reason to take it apart farther than checking the air filters, so I can't say for positive one way or the other. My FC420V does not have that tube on it, but the way it mounts to the engine on the tractor its on may have something to do with that.
