JD 5103
Would appreciate a little advice from those more knowledgeable:
I have a JD 5103 ~4 years old (<400hrs) and I left the 3pt hitch in the up position a couple of weeks ago. Have been using the front-end loader with no problems. Yesterday I tried to lower the rear hitch and it seems to be locked in the up position and will not lower. I checked the tran/hydraulic oil and it was low, so I added more and got it up in range, but no luck. Also tried jumping up and down on the lift arms (225 lb) and it did not budge at all.
Would appreciate knowing if anyone has had this problem and what to do.

Thanks for the 2 quick replies. I had already tried the draft control lever up and down with no luck. After I found it, I tried the velocity control lever. I opened it all the way and back with no change. Thanks for the two good suggestions anyway.
The front loader works fine, but nothing happens when you raise or lower the lift arm. The arms feel like they are hitting a solid stop and won't budge even a little. I was pulling a trailer so had the arms up high to clear it and just forgot to let them back down when finished. I sure hate to call the dealer if this is something I might could do, but that may be where I am headed.

I'm a certified John Deere technician and have seen this problem. The rockshaft control valve is usually the culprate. I just fixed one last week on a 5425 and the valve runs $800 bucks plus about 8 hrs of labor to do it. Hope this helps. It's a big job and unless you have all the right tools and the room to tear this down, I would recomend you bring it to your dealer.

Thanks so much for the links. Looks like I have the same problem others have had. I took the housing cover off the rock shaft drop velocity adjustment. Lost a lot of fluid, arms came right down, and saw the small amount of rust everyone talked about. Cleaned that up and re-assembled. It works, BUT now the arms will lower and jump back up, over and over. IS this a bleeding the lines issue?? I undid the allen screw plug on the face of the housing and nothing came out (with tractor running and a load on it). I am barely functional, but had to screw the valve all the way in to get it to stop jumping up and down. Then if you raised the brush hog, the lift would not lower until I opened the valve and lowered it, and closed it back.
I recommend anyone working on these tractors to go to church first, because (to put it nicely) I had very unkind thoughts and words about all of the 600,000,000+ people in India who made this tractor, and of John Deere who let them. This housing and valve is very CHEAPLY made ( I can see how water got in), and the gasket is thinner than paper. I expected a lot better from John Deere and I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.. I don't think any of us expect to have to buy an 800$ part for a tractor that has not been run 400hrs (370 to be exact).

I think I will service the tractor and replace oil filters and fluid back to factory levels. Fluid is on the stick, but may have lost too much in the process.

If anyone has any thoughts about the implement jumping up and down when the valve is open, please reply.

There is no bleeding needed for the rockshaft/hydraulics. I would suggest not using the rate-of-drop valve to hold the rockshaft up. Is it possible that something did not get put together correctly. What is the position of the control lever when it is going up and down? Does it stay down when the control level is down?

I would say what is happening is the tractor raises it up, it then leaks down, the tractor raises it up, etc.

I have a 5103 as well and the exact thing with the arms getting stuck has happened to me so it is the rockshaft control valve and mine as well has less then three hundred hours

I have the same issue at 210 hours. I took it apart and made a few thicker gaskets of gasket material. It works now but the 3pt jumps up and down an inch or more constantly. What did I do wrong here? Where and how would it be leaking down? Thanks guys for any help! i did not find any rust on or in the valve. It is kept inside and with this drought it has not been wet until I rinsed it before surgery.
