Matt asked for some pics of my 485 thumb so I thought I'd run a few for those of you deciding on buying one/ getting a third party or fabbing your own. It's not cheap from Deere, since I bought the hoe I got it too but in truth I might have made my own. I'll say this, it's nice to have regardless how you do it.

The thumb has about 4 or 5 holes to change the position with a pin that secures it. It is not hydro but that might have been nice. I do have the third SCV so I guess I could fab a piston but that won't happen too soon as it's fine for me right now the way it is.
Two things: Because it's new to the 485, you can't put it on older 448 or 485 hoes before 2010 as the mounting hole and extension to the plate aren't there. The other thing is that Deere specs it with the 18" bucket only, I think it's to have teeth mesh properly and imagine this isn't a big deal if you have the 12" or 24" buckets.

The first and second pics are the thumb fully opened a fully closed.
Rob

ps: although it looks like it the thumb doesn't interfere with the functioning of the bucket while digging at all when in the fully opened position.

Nice! That is the first real pictures of the JD option I have seen. Did/do they offer a cylinder for it?

That's a good question Kenny. I don't see any real problems adapting one to it.

Rob, thanks so much for the pics. Just one point the thumb itself will go on the 448 an 485. But you need the longer pin. The mount to fix the thumb position won't work on the older models. So if you want the thumb and are willing to fab the positioning arm it will work.

I don't see much to adapting it Matt. Weld a couple of plates on either side of the dipper, get the longer rod, like you said, and you're good to go as far as I can see.
Deere sets it up with the 18" bucket but I don't think this is a big deal, it just meshes better.
