I started my 455 (98) the other day for the first time in about 2 months and discoverd that the throttle moved forward fine but wouldn't return, I suspected a corroded/lose/popped cable but it is fine. No other issues with starting/running/implement operation etc.

I am able to move the lever (governor linkage?) to which it attaches by hand but it is VERY stiff.

Any input on the best way to free this up some before I go in blind and possibly wreck something would be appreciated.

Page 4-32 of the tech manual covers cable stiffness and adjustment and hints at governor nut adjustment to allow free movement but my reluctance to adjust the nut without advice stems from a lack of understanding how that could be the issue given it was functioning properly when last used 2 months ago but appears stiff now.

Maybe I should just try loosening the nut a little and see what happens? If I mark the current location before adjusting, I should be able to get back to current position if something else happens as a result of loosening it.

Thanks,

-Van.

I would try some good penetrating oil at the joints that move. The best penetrating oil is Blue Creeper. Beats Kroil 10-1.
Also, get some of that oil into the cable sheath. From the pic, things look pretty dry and some corroded.

Also, if moving a nut, mark its position and keep track of the number of turns so you can 'return' it to original place.

Might also try removing the cable holder to see if the tightness is in the levers or within the cable sheath. Try to isolate the problem before attempting a fix.

Hey beenthere (metoo). Good suggestions. I considered a lube/penetrating product as I have a couple on hand but had read that some contain nasty additives that can be harmful.

On hand, I have your standard WD40 (concerned about that one) and 3in1 white lithium grease.

The cable itself slides well (but never hurts to lube that as well) and no tightness or crimping. I'll take a closer look at the lever but it seemed to operate fine and as it has before.

Thanks for the input, it gives me some direction and I appreciate that,

-Van.
