4310 4wd ehydro 420 loader asof 4/2/02
First let me state that the 4310 is far advanced over the 850. I can say the 4310 has a little trouble turning my 6ft rd woods finish mower that the 850 had no trouble. I wonder if the hydro and other accessories rob alot of hp. Also my wheels on the 850 must have been spread wider because I have hit the pucker factor several times due to feeling top heavy on the 4310. I think I need to reverse the wheels to get a wider foot print. My 4310 is a great machine and I do not want the 850 back, but the simpicity of the 850 gear clutch manual pto engagement left most of the raw horsepower for implements I think. How do other 4x10 owners feel.

Twanger, I have a 4310 with e-Hydro and I love it... but I really can't answer your question since #1 my land is relatively flat... and the wheels are already at the widest (dealer mounted them in that position because of the BH) and #2 I haven't driven anything with the PTO yet... #3 I really don't (as you do) have any good reference to compare it to (my old tractor was a gas powered Oliver that had about the same HP but weighed about 2,000 lbs more than the 4310). But I am sure the e-Hydro does use some add'l HP over the gear tractor since in JD's own specs it rates a gear 4310 with 27 PTO HP and the e-Hydro at 25!
Compared to the Oliver... By seat of the pants(power) the JD puts the power to the ground better, is more user friendly, and has far better FEL/BH cycle times, I my opinion, this tractor is one powerful/well designed machine and proves how far tractors have come!
Get your wheels widened and enjoy... you'll fall more and more in love with it each time yyou use her (Him?)!

Don't know about the 4310.
But my 1978 JD850,2 wheel drive 72"MMM,1800 hours still looking and running like new..

You lost 2 to 3 pto HP when you went from gear to hydro, this is normal and the gap gets larger as the hp increases.
