I got limited info on this tractor, and am asking for someone else.

A friend of my FIL has a 2040 tore down to rebuild the engine. He is a diesel mechanic by trade, but is unsure on the procedure to time the balance shafts, or if they even need timed. He said they have marks, so I told him they likely do need timed, or there wouldnt be marks.

Cant find anything online at all.

The balancer shafts DO need to be timed. I hope he has them marked so he puts them back in the correct side, left and right.
With number one piston at TDC of the compression stroke, install balancer shafts with timing mark at 12 o'clock.
The cam shaft gear will have a timing mark too. If a line is drawn from the center line of the crankshaft through the center line of the cam shaft, the timing mark will on this line BETWEEN the two shafts (crank shaft & can shaft).

Thanks. I'll pass that on.

IS that info in an aftermarket IT manual or something I can recommend him to buy.

Are you sure about it being a 2040? The 2040 had a 3 cylinder engine and did not use balancer shafts. The 2020, 2030, 2440, and 2640 were 4 cylinder enagines and used balancer shafts. I have to disagree with Zebrafive on the timing marks. With crankshaft at TDC, the balancer shaft timing marks should point towards the center of the crankshaft The same way he described the camshaft timing. The heaviest part of balancer shaft will be straight down at that point.

An I&T manual will more than likely have timing info for the balancer shafts. A Deere tech manual definitely will. As you can see, we have two detailed but opposing opinions posted here. If your buddy wants to get this tractor up and running without doing the job twice, he needs to go elsewhere for reliable info.

Oops MY BAD:eek:. I was looking at the gear keyway, NOT the timing mark. Blame it on old eyes/poor pictures in the JD tech manual. The tech manual has NO wrtten instructions for timing the balance shafts, only a picture. Timing marks should point to crank center.
