The 145 loader keeps creeping up. The 3 pt hitch and the 145 will not stay up when the tractor is off. I've got the Technical Manual and looked at the rockshaft rebuilding section. Looks like perhaps the return piston is leaking? Will this make the loader creep when running or fall when tractor is off? Is it much of an issue to take the top of the trans off and replace the seals/whatever or is that something that maybe should be left to pros?

It's not really an issue except when blading or mowing, the loader keeps drifting up. The 3 pt hitch works properly other than falling when off. Maybe it's not worth messing with? If it is, is there a good place to buy a rebuild kit or should I stick with JD if they are still available?

3 pt & loader creeping is not related but are due to each control valve leaking internally. Only solution to creeping up on FEL is a new control valve assembly.

The control valves for the loader are separate (loader has it's own 2 valves) from the 3 pt and not even with the single controller by the seat which is not used. I did replace the seals and cleaned the assembly in the 2 pistons in the loader valve, but nothing changed. The tilt also has a dead spot going down, but will go through by going back up a bit and then back down. Same thing, it's always been like that since I've had this thing since 85 or so.

I'm thinking for now I'm not going to mess with the rockshaft because the 3 pt drifting down at stop doesn't bother me, but the creeping up loader does. So do I need new loader pistons as well as seals? Or maybe a whole new control mechanism?

You need a new control valve for loader as the problem you refer to is non-repairable. I'm fully aware that loader & 3 pt control valves are separate. I sold JD 2020 tractors & installed frt end loaders when they were new back in the late 60's. When you purchase new control valve be sure it's closed-center type or has CC plug installed.

Wow, these things are unobtanium and even if they are it's getting near $1000. Are you sure there's no way to repair this valve? I mean what can go wrong other than the o-rings? I did have a hard time getting the rings in without damaging them, but it operated exactly the same before I worked on it and after. I just don't see anything magic in it.

The machined clearances between the spools & valve housings become to much to adequately seal the oil pressure. YES I'm 100% positive to correct problem valve will need to be replaced. There are several places to get a 2 spool valve for around $250. Surplus Center is one place to check. Photo below is just one of many valves available. If you get a new valve be sure it's relief valve is set at 2500 psi or higher and it has CC plug with correct seals installed.

I really appreciate that information. It's just a matter now if the creep bothers me $250 worth. It's really just an irritant at this point and hasn't changed in 30 years. It looks like the ports are on the top unlike the original, is that going to be an issue other than perhaps buying new hydraulic lines?

There are actually more important things this tractor needs, the power steering rebuilt and the front spindle repaired, plus a rather large oil leak that I'm not sure if it's the rear seal in the engine or the oil pan. I need to power wash it and take a good look at it. The clutch has been replaced as well as the engine seal a few years ago as well as the inboard disk brakes and a new hydraulic pump. But all in all it really runs pretty good for it's faults.

Since you seem to know so much about the 2020, how do I keep it from grinding while changing gears? Sometimes it also seems to almost lock up in nearly any gear when running at full rpm soon after starting. I've been using aftermarket oil in the trans/hydraulics and am pretty good about changing the filter.

Have you checked clutch pedal free travel? It's possible the oil leak you mentioned has caused clutch lining to swell. Locking up could be a faulty brg on trans input shaft.
