Sorry to ask so many questions, I just want to get the best mower for my money...

I found a 2002 LX255 for $2800 which seems high, but maybe not. It has 2 hours on it. Would this be a better machine than a x300 for $3000? I haven't found much info on the LX255s since on the JD site it just shows 100 series when I click on LX series.

Thanks,

Mike

Anytime you see an "L" in a John Deere lawn and garden tractor model, that tells you that the model is a "lawn tractor" as opposed to a "garden tractor" The fine distinction being that a lawn tractor is not designed for ground engaging implements, like a tiller. Think of a lawn tractor as a big, somewhat clumsy riding mower and not much else. The X series, including the X3xx are garden tractors, which will mow just like a lawn tractor, but can also handle a tiller and other implements.

Actually I believe the X300 series are Lawn Tractors Not Garden Tractors. The Garden Tractors are the X500 & X700 series

Well, according to the spec and attachment sheet, you're right. No tiller, and no other "serious" implements. Well, at least that "LX" "X" difference used to work. :(

I think the money for the LX255 is high,
but, I also think it is a better built tractor.

The X300's have Kawasaki power,, twin,
where the LX has a 15Hp Kohler single,
but, the rest of the machine is probably
built heavier than the X300. (IMHO)

I would compare the X300 more closely
to the LT series, not the LX. When they
came out with the X300's, they combined the
LT and LX series together and went with
1 line of Lawn tractors.

If you were looking at the X320, or X340,
I would think you were up in the LX type
of machine, when it comes to tranny, etc.

:D

For that kind of money, I would look just a few years older at some of the very highly respected JD garden tractor designs.

You could get a 318, 330, 332, or possibly even 400 - 420 for that kind of money.

Check out the model line up, statistics, and so forth at http://www.weekendfreedommachines.org Then check the classifieds. Some of the folks that hang out there are die hard restorationists who are putting together parade tractors. But most of them work their tractors hard and you will definitely get a square deal from any of them if you find a tractor to your liking in the classifieds. The two bookmarks that I hit the most when I surf are TBN and WFM.

I have an LX255 and love it, but $2800 for a used one sounds awfully steep. I think that is what I paid for mine new...although 2 hours is pretty close to new.

Better ad a new carb and possibly a fuel tank to the price tag on that LX. Two hrs on a machine that old isn't necessarily a good a thing as you might think.
BTW, 2002 was the last year of production for the LX255 and list price was $3649. The LX255 was dropped early because of horsepower overlap by the second generation of LT's.

I have a 1999 LX255 and it owe's me nothing. I would like the 17Hp Kawi V-twin in the X300 though. Actually, make it an X304. Each series has it's strong points. The X300 have the new 4 year warranty. The LX would be two years, assuming it's never been sold. If it has been sold and has no remaining warranty, it's a no brainer.

Edit: Holy Crap! I realized the last post in this thread is months old. Sorry, new guy here. Good luck with the new X300 you bought six months ago... hehe.
