I forgot to add that before getting into repairs, he said the bell housing was full of oil. In fact he repeated it with a note of amazement, as though he didn't understand how that could happen. I didn't do the work and he didn't give a reason when the job was completed, so I can't forward information on it. This tractor often ran a hydraulic motor, on my hay rake. The connection leaked some, but I felt that I was watching the fluid level often enough.

Engine oil? Or hydraulic oil?
I assume he fixed the cause of the leak.

Hydraulic. Yes for $5k it all was fixed and has been successfully operated for a few months now.

Thanks for following up. Too many people post a problem, get a lot of input, then after fixing it don't bother to communicate the fix.
