Picked up this John Deere planter and i think its a model 246 but it has the rubber wheels. Can someone please tell me what it is? I would like to find the manuals for it as it needs a little work and some parts replacement. Thank you...........R-G

Thank you for the info, is there any other place to get parts besides the dealer?

Probably a number of places (if you can find them) where you can get used parts.
Which parts are you after?

Model 246/247....246 drills seed, 247 hill drops. MOST will be 246's. No known (to me) source of hard parts, although seed plates ARE available aftermarket. Deere carries the vast majority of parts still. Not ALL parts though....Used parts are scarce unless you buy a donor planter to cannibalize for parts. Decent planter in it's day. Only real issue is the fact that there are a TON of exposed moving parts.

There were several styles of closing wheels, among them, the rubber tire covered style as pictured.

Looks like much of the fertilizer attachment is still in place, excepting the fert cans.....Those can be rather hard to come by.

Just wondering...? How much was the seller asking?

Find fert cans, get everything up in good working order, shoot paint and put new decals on it and you have a $700 to $800 planter. That might cost $250 to $400 to get to that point based on what complete fert cans sell for (on ebay) when they show up....

My idea of a good deal is one I can make a few bucks once it's "finished". That means buying under "market value". Long story short, I'd offer about $250 for what's on the trailer and take my chances from there. He might get more, but not from me!

The chute that the seeds drop through are rusted out as well as the hardware the actuates them. Im sure the nuts will snap off if i try to unbolt anything. Its a hilldrop for sure some of the parts for it are different than the drill seeder. I bought it before i asked what model it was with the plan to fix it up and use. Price i paid was $100.00 couldnt say no........

There's a few pesos to be claimed there if you decide to "flip" it. That's as cheap as I've seen ANY 2-row planter in a few years.

IIRC, Mother Deere now offers replacement seed drop tubes that are rubber instead of the old rust-proned models.
