JD LX277 PTO won't engage

I inherited the mower from my Dad and haven't had it long. Last fall when mulching leaves the pto quit operating and have been troubleshooting it to try to find the source of the problem. I've talked to some local repair shops and they've been helpful to a point, but suggested that I take it to the local John Deere dealer, but am hesitant to as I got drilled with a large repair bill on a JD snow blower last winter. The local repair mechanic I spoke with suggested that it may be either a battery or the PTO switch. I did totally charge the battery and put it in, but made no difference. I looked under the deck and see no problems there either. Any clues or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

look below engine pulley and see if wires are disconnected that's where your pto wires are .this happened to me a few times.

Thanks Ron. What you say made a lot of sense since I was mulching leaves at the time and was plowing a mass of leaves even with the mower deck up higher. there were a lot of leaves on the deck. I looked all over between the deck and the bottom of the tractor and can't find any wires that are disconnected. I've tried looking up schematics on the internet and have yet to find one that is beneficial. Are you indicating that these wires are in close proximity to the PTO pulley? Thanks for your response.

Yes --- the wires actually attach to the PTO housing. If you can't find wires at that pulley/PTO housing, that's your problem. There is a short wire harness coming off the PTO housing that should plug in to a plug right at the frame.
