I had a JD 5103, now have a 5403. Both have the same hood design at the front where you lift the hood to open it. You have to catch the front lip of the hood with your thumb and lift. That's the way I do it. There is very little surface there to make hand contact with. I've always wondered why there is not at least a larger lip molded into the hood at that location that would allow for the heel of your hand to open it with. Sure would make it easier and a bit safer. Anyone ever do a mod to improve this? Thanks

On my 4520 same method of opening. I bought a garage door handle and painted J.D. green and at bottom of hood about 1 inch up from bottom center bolted the handle. hand is down there any way to release the catch. Sure made it easier when having gloves on.

Thanks Ken. I had thought about some type of handle, but concerned about drilling holes in the fiberglass.... might cause some further cracking around the holes.

Look at the bottom of hood there is a steel rod the latch grabs then just above this level is a good 1/4" inch thick or more fiberglass.
Cold morning thick gloves and try to open hood. with thumb. One slip will give you a shave.
Bad enough to have to straddle the FWL. and get the grill protector to lean forward.
The handle is real handy to use.

That sounds like a great idea for all tractors. My LS is also hard to get a grip on. It is supposed to pop up a bit on its own like a car hood but it seldom does so I have to move it a bit to get the latch to release. A nice polished stainless steel grip would look nice there. Perhaps one that looks like a 1 to 1.5" height x 1" thick x 3" wide block with the bottom edge routered out to form about a 1/4" indent would work perfectly and not look too bad. Drill and tap it and install bolts from inside and it would look customized.
I wonder what something like that would cost for a machine shop to turn out. Of course one would have to measure their particular tractor for final dimensions and possible hood curvature to match the mounting side.

Gary the galvanized lift door opener for the garage painted in this case green. What more could anyone ask. Sure will last as long as the tractor.
How did you do with the power outage last week in your area.. Relivatives in Malvern all went to a Bro. in Law that had a wood stove in his shop. Didn't bring more wood. But enjoyed what he had.
We never had a blink of power Did have some ice.

We havent lost power at my house thru the whole storm systems of wind, snow and rain. Lucky for me since I dont have any heat other than electrical at my home. Power outages are really weird in how they go out on one street and the next not.
I am just setting here looking at our full of water ponds, first time its been full since last March and watching the Canadian Drakes fight. It must be approaching mating season again.

Gary Our ponds have about a 1' of water no real rain since before June last year. To low to let cattle on the fields. unless a difference source of water.
We have a spring that has started to flow and over the past 50+ years have learned when there is rain in Kansas City area in about 4 to 6 weeks later the spring starts running.
Our pond fish are all dusty going to have to restock them.
